Rosalie “Babs” Louise Jablonski, 76, died Jan. 10, 2022, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She graduated from St. Michaels Catholic High School in Chicago. She was employed by the Chicago Credit Bureau and Carson’s Clothing during her Chicago residency. She was also an accounts payable clerk at the Pick Congress Hotel and Solo Cup. She married LeRoy Jablonski on Jan. 25, 1964, and he survives her. They relocated to Urbandale with Amoco Oil in 1974 where they had one daughter, Jennifer, and have since resided most of their life. Rosalie was employed as a bookkeeper at the Ned Miller Law Firm and Musser Accounting.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, from 9-11 a.m. with a funeral mass to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3663 66th St., Urbandale. Burial will be held at Glendale Cemetery. 

William (Willie) R. Berndt, 78, died unexpectedly at his home in Johnston on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022.  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation one hour prior beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date. He was born and raised in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, and graduated from Eagle Butte High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from the South Dakota School of Mines and master’s degree from the Florida Institute of Technology. He married Diane Ginn, who survives him, on Nov. 30, 1968, in Lawton, Oklahoma.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded two bronze stars and was honorably discharged. He retired from John Deere as a metallurgical engineer after 37 years.

Joseph “Joe” Cooley, 79, of Adel, died Jan. 3, 2022, at his home with his family by his side. Bradley Dean Anderson, 64, of Van Meter died at home on Dec. 28, 2021. He was born and raised in Red Oak. He married his first wife, Tammy Luke, in 1980, and they had a daughter, Dawn, in August of 1981. He married Marj Sept. 16, 1989, in Van Meter, where they have made their home for the past 32 years.
 He worked for EMC Insurance for 28 years as an assistant buyer until his retirement in February of 2020.

Marc VanderLinden, former owner of Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe in Johnston, died Dec. 29, 2021, at Valley View Village in Des Moines at the age of 80. He was born in Des Moines and graduated from East High School and Grand View University. He was a business owner throughout his life. He was the owner of AudioCom Inc. from 1968-2015. He and his wife, Carol, who preceded him in death, owned and operated Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe from 1990-2013.

Michael Dennis Stoppel, 58, of Adel, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at MercyOne, West Des Moines. He graduated from Adel-DeSoto High School in May of 1981 then earned an associate’s degree in human services from DMACC. He also earned a bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University. Eugene Richard Maahs, 90, of Adel, died Dec, 17, 2021. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from Whittemore Public High School. On Sept. 29, 1951, he married Naomi Greinert, who survives him, and they had five children. In 1953, he received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural journalism from Iowa State University.
He served as an officer in the United States Air Force. He then worked two years as News, Farm and Sports editor for the Decorah Newspapers. In 1958, he joined the staff of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation as editor of the Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman. He retired in 1996, as the executive director/secretary treasurer of the Iowa Farm Bureau and the secretary treasurer/senior vice president and a member of the Board of Directors of the FBL Financial Group, Inc. As a representative of Farm Bureau, he was a member of the committee that established the Century Farm Program.
He was the president of the Des Moines chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalism society, and of the Iowa Industrial Editors Association. He also was a member of the Iowa and American Society of Association Executives, American Agricultural Editors Association, Agricultural Relations Council and American Management Association.
Gene and Naomi also operated Country Gardens and were involved in two businesses in Adel, Cameo Rose Collection and Antiques on Ninth. He served nine months as volunteer interim executive director of Living History Farms in 2000 and nine years on its board of directors. He served as chairman of the Board of Elders at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines and was an active member at Fatih Lutheran Church in Adel. He served as chairman of the Polk County Extension Council and on the Dallas County Extension Council. He was a member of the American Legion Post 464 in Adel.

Dennis Lee Dixon, 85, of rural Adel died Dec. 14. 2021. He graduated from Gowrie High School in 1954 prior to attending Iowa State University in Ames, where he earned a degree in journalism in 1958. He was recognized as Photographer of the Year for his work for the Iowa State University newspaper.
He served two years with U.S. Army forces based in Germany then joined Hy-Line International, for which he had opportunities to live and work in Argentina and Brazil, where he became proficient in both Spanish and Portuguese. Moving back to the USA prior to 1969, he held regional and international sales director roles based in Hy-Line’s corporate headquarters while living in rural homes in Waukee and Adel.
Retiring in 2000, Dennis dabbled in international business consulting for some local companies and travelled the states with his wife, Darlene.
His wife of 58 years, Darlene (Lipke), survives.

Rochelle Ann (Olsen) Haas, 81, died at home on Dec. 1, 2021, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers and cancer. She is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Duane Haas; children, Brian (Janice) Haas, Doug Haas, DeAnn (Craig) McCue; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 27, 2021, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale. 

Clifford Errol Bergman, 89, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas, surrounded by his family. He was born in Adel and graduated from Adel High School in 1951. Cliff and Jean Binns were married July 3, 1957, and had been married for 57 years when Jean passed away in September 2014.
Cliff worked for Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company (later Chicago Bridge and Iron) in Clive for almost 49 years, retiring in 2001 prior to Cliff and Jean’s relocation to Sugar Land, Texas. He served his country for two years (1952-1954) during the Korean War.
In his retirement, Cliff joined Fort Bend Master Gardeners and was an active member for close to 20 years. He also volunteered for the Fort Bend County Fair AG’tivity Barn through the Fort Bend County Extension Office. He received the Master Gardener of the Year award twice and the “Volunteer of the Year” award for the Fort Bend County Fair.
Funeral services were held Dec. 10 at Christ Church Sugar Land, 3300 Austin Parkway, in Sugar Land, Texas. A second visitation at 9:30 a.m. and a service at 10:30 a.m. will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel, Iowa, with burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.

Michael Scott McPherren, 41, of Urbandale was remembered with an informal gathering Dec. 13 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home. He is survived by three children: Ella (Elisa), 15; Emma (Carly), 7; and Charlie (Carly), 5; and other family and friends.
He grew up in Newton and West Des Moines. He graduated from Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri. After high school, he enlisted in the Army.  He owned a property maintenance company and contracting business.

Rick Borst, 69, of Adel, died at his home Nov. 17, 2021. Funeral services were held Nov. 23 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. Burial was at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
During his childhood, he lived in Redfield and then Adel. In 1983, Rick married Cindy Case, and they lived briefly in Waukee and Van Meter before settling in Adel for more than 35 years. She survives him. He ran his own garage in Des Moines and worked as a mechanic for the Des Moines Fire Department and Midwest Ambulance before a 20-year career as the school bus mechanic for ADM Schools. He started mowing for clients in 1999 and quickly grew his business into a full-service lawn care company that he operated for more than 20 years.

Mary Eileen McManus, 90, of Urbandale died Nov. 15, 2021. She attended Bellevue High School in Nebraska and received her two-year associate nursing degree from St. Joseph’s Hospital, affiliated with Creighton University in Omaha. In their first years as a family, Mary and Walt, who served as a U.S. Army Judge Advocate, moved more than ten times. They settled in Urbandale in 1958. She was a substitute nurse in the Des Moines Public Schools while pursuing her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Drake University in Des Moines. She then began a more than 20-year career as a counselor, serving as an inpatient counselor at the Harold Hughes Treatment Center at General Hospital and then at Mercy Alcohol & Drug Recovery Program. She opened her own family therapy practice in Urbandale. She retired to care for her husband in his final years. They celebrated 61 years of marriage together.
Visitation will be 3:30-7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29 with a prayer service and scriptural rosary to follow. Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 30 with a luncheon immediately following, both at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Deborah Juliana Ksobiech died Nov. 12, 2021. A Celebration of Life was held Nov. 21, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale. She was born on Oct. 28, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois. She married Tom Ksobiech Nov. 20, 1971. He survives her. She volunteered to teach the Religious Education program at St. Joan of Arc Parish, volunteered at her children’s schools, and helped at the Lisle Library. Tom and Deborah also sang together in the church choir. The couple lived in Easton, Pennsylvania until retirement in 2014, when they moved to Urbandale. 

Daniel Steven Pritchard died unexpectedly in his sleep on Nov. 7, 2021. A private service was held. He graduated from North High School in 2008. He enjoyed art and music, was a member of the band, was on the cross-country team and became an avid runner the past couple years. He earned his Eagle Scout award as a senior in high school. In 2014, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in landscape architecture and chose to work for Confluence in Kansas City and transferred to their office in Des Moines in 2020. 

Thomas Larry Hingst, 75, of Des Moines died Nov. 11, 2021, from chronic illness at MercyOne Medical Center. He married Patricia, who survives him, on Feb. 14, 1976, in Burlington. He served in the Navy after high school, then worked in construction, warehouse and, eventually, for the post office until he retired after 25 years.
Services were held Nov. 17 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. A graveside service followed at at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

He graduated from Scranton High School in 1956. On Oct. 4, 1958, he married Joyce Finnegan, who survives him. Jim worked in the construction industry for many years, was the owner of Sam’s Downtown Tap for 10 years and finished his working career with VanPelt painting. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Jim Stajcar, 72, of Adel, died on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at UnityPoint Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nicki (Shinn) Stajcar. He graduated from Adel-De Soto High School. He worked for a lumber company in Johnston then, in 1977 joined Iowa Power (MidAmerica Energy), and worked in several jobs there, retiring after 30 years.
 Jim was a hard worker and applied that hard work and dedication to all of the tasks he did at work, at home and helping others.

Holly Ann Van Buren, 65, of Adel, died Oct. 23, 2021, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. She was raised in Cooperstown, New York. Holly had spent her life living in several states including Florida, Texas, and eventually residing in Iowa with her daughter Samantha (Patrick) Johns and grandchildren. Holly spent her career in early education.
A celebration of Holly’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at Big Al’s BBQ in Adel. 

Betty (Crowson) Naber of Waukee died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at age 83. Betty Sue graduated from Black River Falls High School in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1956. She married Marvin Naber on April 14, 1962, and together they had five children. After 19 years of staying home raising her kids, Betty went to work for the Cedar Rapids Community School District as a confidential secretary until she retired. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 16, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial was at Booneville Cemetery. 

Shirley Jean Grant Templet died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, in Waukee, five days before her 87th birthday. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in Detroit. At the age of 56, Shirley decided to get her college degree and attended Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia, graduating in 1992 with an associate in arts degree. She married Charles Alexander Templet in 1952. They had two children. She lived in Savannah for 50 years, where she worked as an office administrator for St. Joseph’s Hospital. She moved to Independence Village in Waukee in 2021. A small private family gathering was planned.

Juanita “Bernice” Nicholas, 95, died Sept. 29, 2021, while living at Edencrest at Green Meadows Assisted Living Community in Johnston, where she has lived since February 2019. Bernice was married to Norman Nicholas, who preceded her in death. They moved to Sandwich, Illinois, where Norman had a floor covering business in Aurora and Bernice was a material manager for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Survivors include sister-in-law, Margery Mahanna, several nieces, Patricia (Nicholas) Brooks, Dawn (Mahanna) Gomez and Margaret (Mahanna) Leone and two nephews, William Mahanna and James Mahanna. Private graveside services will be held at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Sandwich.

Gina McNair, 62, of Van Meter, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, at MercyOne, West Des Moines.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, 2021 at the De Soto Calvary Baptist Church with a funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. A private burial will take place in the Stump-Thornton-Barto Cemetery in rural Van Meter. Gina attended Adel De Soto schools through 11th grade and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1977. She married Edward McNair on Nov. 24, 1978. Together, they built a successful company, McNair Geothermal, based out of Van Meter. He preceded her in death.

Tonya Anne (Moon) Walrod, 59, of De Soto, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, with her family beside her. Timothy “Tim” Daugherty, 69, of Adel, died Oct. 3, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Larry Dean Barbieri, 61, of Des Moines passed away on Sept. 24, 2021. Larry was born in Waukee and graduated from Waukee High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guido and Norma Barbieri, and a brother, Guido. Larry is survived by his three sisters, Lucy Maxwell (Steve) of Hartford, Gloria Christy (Scott, deceased) of Johnston and Delores Barbieri of Waukee, and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia “Patty Banks” Harsh, 84, of Adel, died at Adel Acres under the care of Hospice of the Midwest on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021. Shirley Beth Beasley, 98, of Adel, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - McCalley Chapel in Adel. A private family burial will take place at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
She graduated from Redfield High School in 1938 and enrolled in the American Institute of Business School in Des Moines. After leaving AIB, she lived at home and worked in the Redfield Library and the school library. When she and Cobb married, they rented a homestead, where they farmed with borrowed horses and machinery, before they moved to a farm where they could do crop share. Beth worked in the fields, maintained a garden and canned the produce, raised chickens to sell the eggs, helped with the livestock and raised three children in a home without electricity and running water. She lived on that farm for nearly 75 years.
During retirement, she enjoyed ceramics, adult school classes, reading and her volunteer work. She served on the Citizens’ Review Committee of the Dallas County Care Facility for many years.

Sally Ann (Facto) Hanes, 63, of Waukee died at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center Sept. 13, 2021. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1975. On Oct. 11, 1975, she married Dennis Dean Hanes, who proceeded her in death. After briefly moving to Colorado, they settled in Waukee, where they raised their three children. Sally was a homemaker, worked at Baker’s Cafeteria, owned Hanes Foodservice that served Plymouth Place in Des Moines, fed children at Apple Tree Children’s Center, and worked at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as a loan underwriter, retiring from there due to her long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Sally was part of the Black Cat Club at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

She taught country school while attending Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.  She then transferred to the University of Nebraska Lincoln, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught second grade at Garfield Avenue School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Phyllis married Richard Hagemeier July 3, 1960. The couple moved to Ft. Louis, Washington, where Richard was stationed and Phyllis taught school on the base. Following Richard’s honorable discharge from the Army, they moved to Ida Grove in 1963 where they raised their three children. She was involved in community and church activities, including Pleasant Valley Bike Trail, Community Housing Board, Horn Hospital Auxiliary, the Library Board, Ida Grove Centennial and RAGBRAI committees, the local Republican party, church bell choir, church circle, and remodel committee for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s 125th Anniversary & Rededication.

Mary Ann Dawson, 92, of Dallas Center died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021. A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 16 at the Caldwell Parrish – McCalley Chapel in Adel. Burial followed at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
She graduated from Van Meter Consolidated Schools in 1947. In 1948, she married Eddie Dawson. He preceded her in death. They had three children, Dennis, Denise, Debra and Deanna. She worked as an office assistant for a tax preparer. She sang at the homecoming for her cousin, Bob Feller, at the Iowa State Fair Grandstand, for KRNT Radio and at Hoyt Sherman Auditorium. Kirk Greenslade, 50, of Grimes (formerly of Adel) died at his home on Aug. 1, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Hayley Greenslade; children, Kolby (Megan) Greenslade, Luke Greenslade, Raquel Greenslade, and Maleah Greenslade; step-children, Sydney, Karsten and Jacob; grandchildren, Kipton and Korver; brothers, Bret Greenslade, Nick Greenslade, and Justin Greenslade; sisters, Lindsay Koons, Danyelle Walls, and Kimberly Wyckoff; father, Steve (Marcia) Greenslade; mother, Debbie Nixon; and grandmother, Bettie Nixon.
Kirk attended Adel-De Soto High School in 1989 and excelled in wrestling and football. After high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corp. Following his service in the Marines, he joined the United States Army Reserves as a recruiter. He owned and operated many different businesses, his most recent being Iron Men Construction.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 6, 2021, with family receiving friends from 4-7 p.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home — McCalley Chapel. Funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home — McCalley Chapel. Burial will be held in the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in rural Van Meter at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Douglas Lee Brown, 75, formerly of Dexter, died at his home on Thursday, July 29, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
He graduated from Dexter High School.  He worked as a supervisor for Parker Brothers Games and then as a courier for FedEx for 28 years. He married Ruth James on April 5, 1985, in Redfield.
Doug is survived by his wife, Ruth; his children, Kim (John) Wright, Shawn (Andy) Knoernschild, and Jenny (Dave) Marks; his step-children, Eric (Heather) Cronk and Alissa (Phill) Miller; his grandchildren, Bonnie, Johnny, Melissa, Clayton, Gabe, Zoe, Finn, Wyatt, and Morgan; his great grandchild, Manaath; his brother, Dan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Floyd E. Benson, 88, died at home on March 13, 2021, surrounded by family. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 1335 N.E. Beaverbrooke Blvd, Grimes. Burial will take place the following day at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
