Mark Steven Soldat

Mark Steven Soldat, 75, died April 18, 2022, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines. He was born in Webster City. He graduated from Johnston High School in 1965. In 1969, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Grinnell University. He went on to study law at Drake University and graduated with a degree in 1974. He practiced law in Algona from 1974 to 2003. During that time, he also served as the Kossuth County Attorney. He spent the latter half of his career practicing law in the Des Moines area and was prominent in the field of workers compensation law. Mark was particularly proud of being a founding member of the Iowa Association for Justice Workers’ Compensation Core Group, his numerous Iowa Supreme Court cases establishing legal precedent which benefitted injured workers, and the fact that he actively practiced law and tried cases for 47 years.
He is survived by his partner, Jeanne Anderson; children, Nathan (Sela) and Jesse; their mother, Marcia Soldat; two grandchildren; and three siblings.
Celebrate Mark’s life from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at Bob Shetler Picnic Area, Shelter 2, N.E. Warrior Ave., Johnston. Family, friends and colleagues are welcome. Patricia Christensen

Patricia Christensen, 79, died Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Pat was born in Des Moines. She resided in Stuart until her high school graduation in 1960. After her retirement from insurance, Pat enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She helped teach English as a second language.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth Dailey; sister, Judy Cropp; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends. Graveside services were Tuesday, May 31 at Van Meter City Cemetery. Online condolences can be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Sally Ann Donovan Latta

Sally Ann (Donovan) Latta, 88, died May 26, 2022. She grew up in West Des Moines, where her parents owned Clover Hills Golf Course. She graduated high school from St. Joseph Academy and was a life-time supporter of St. Joseph and Dowling. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Marycrest College in Davenport. After graduation, she taught junior high English in Bettendorf. In 1958, a new history teacher, Paul Latta, was hired to work in the adjacent classroom. They fell in love and were married for 60 years. In 1969, they had the opportunity to manage/own Ponderosa Golf Course in West Des Moines. They owned it for 35 years until they sold it in 2005.
Sally is survived by her daughters, Catherine Latta (Eric) Jorgensen and Mary Latta (Michael) Thilges; four grandchildren; two great grandsons, and other relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband.
Funeral services will be June 21 at Sacred Heart Church, West Des Moines. Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by mass at 10:30 a.m.

Julio Cesar Gamboa Vázquez

Julio Cesar Gamboa Vázquez, 46, died May 22, 2022, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born in Mexico City and moved to the U.S. at age 18. He married Maricarmen in 2014 in West Des Moines. Julio was a talented chef who spent time at numerous Des Moines restaurants, including Dos Ríos, Malo, Biaggi’s and most recently, Centro.
Julio is survived by his wife; children Alan Lozano and Danna Lozano; mother Angelina Vázquez Martinez; and siblings Sergio, Miguel Alejandro, Ricardo Javier and Yuliana Elizabeth.
The family celebrated Julio’s life with a private prayer service prior to cremation rites. Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee was entrusted with Julio’s final arrangements.

Richard Dean Johnson

Richard “Dick” Dean Johnson, 87, died May 26, 2022, after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born to Harry and Clarice Johnson in Spencer, Nebraska. After graduating from Spencer High School in 1952, he earned a degree from General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, and in 1954, pursued a business administration with accounting degree from Drake University, then earned his CPA in 1963. After working a short time with the Auditor of State staff as director of audits in 1968, Dick was appointed as director of finance with the Iowa Highway Commission. In 1975, when it was reorganized as the Department of Transportation, he served as director of the Administration Division and director of the Motor Vehicle Division. In 1979, Dick was appointed by Gov. Robert Ray to serve as State Auditor. He loyally served the citizens of Iowa as the state’s financial “watchdog” until his retirement in 2002. Dick continued to share his expertise with the financial boards of local companies, including Vision Bank of Iowa, PMMIC and Lincolnway Energy.
In 1956, Dick married Marjorie Sire of Butte, Nebraska. They had four children. He was a member of the Nebraska and Iowa National Guard from 1955-1990. After retirement, he participated in the local American Legion chapter. Dick served as city clerk and mayor for the town of Sheldahl from 1959-1975. He was a farm owner and member of the Boone County Farm Bureau, Madrid Evangelical Free Church and Rotary Club.
Dick was preceded in death by his siblings, Glennis, Dorothy and Leonard; and two grandsons. He is survived by his wife; sisters Lucille and Lila; children, DeAnn (Brian) Thompson, JoAnn (Stephen) Leach, LeAnn (Kevin) Houlette, and David (Mary) Johnson; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation was on Tuesday, May 31 at Madrid Evangelical Free Church. A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, also at the church.

Marissa Ruffolo

Marissa Christine Ruffolo, 28, died May 19, 2022. Marissa grew up in Franklin, Wisconsin. She moved to Iowa in 2011, graduated with the class of 2012 from Ankeny High School, and has called Ankeny home ever since. She is survived by her daughter, Aubree; parents, Michael Ruffolo and Debbie (Al) Grabarczyk; and brothers Nicholas (Sarah) and Christopher.
A celebration of Marissa’s life will be 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at Cherry Glen Picnic Site No. 4 in Ankeny.

Callen Robert Woolery

Callen Robert Woolery, 6 weeks old, died May 19, 2022, at Blank Children’s Hospital. He was born on April 8, 2022, the son of Brandon and Amy Woolery. Callen, along with his twin brother, Maverick, decided to come into this world early at 27 weeks. Although Callen was only here for six weeks, he touched the hearts of many.
In addition to his parents, Callen is survived by his twin brother; sisters Breckyn, Sloane and Harlow; grandparents Dale and Sally Woolery and Mary Young; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Zetta Irene Gruver

Zetta Irene Gruver, 92, died under hospice care in Ankeny on May 12, 2022. She married Maynard Gruver in 1948. They had three children: William, Linda and Steven.
Zetta was preceded in death by her husband, son William, and great-granddaughter Kaylee. She is survived by her children, Linda (Denny) Anderson and Steve (Virginia) Gruver, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. There will be a private memorial at a later date.

Jerry William Helmke

Jerry William Helmke, 88, died May 23, 2022, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Jerry was born in Renwick and graduated from Renwick High School in 1952. He worked at Gilmer Creamery in Eagle Grove, Renwick Chevrolet and Renwick Creamery. The Helmke farm was the first to receive electricity in Wright County.
In 1957, Jerry married Mardelle Joyce Larson. They lived in Renwick until they moved to Humboldt in 1959, where they raised five children. He started working for REC in 1957 and worked there until he retired in April 1996 as a foreman.
Jerry is survived by his children, Angela (Jeff) Paulson, Shelly (Randy) Hatch, Mitchell Helmke, Carmala (John) Pitt, and Jennifer (Tim) Kapsch; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister Jancie Basler; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife; an infant son; two infant grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters.
Per Jerry’s, wishes his body has been cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Viola ‘Vi’ Kay De Stigter

Viola “Vi” Kay De Stigter, 78, died May 21, 2022. She was born in Prinsburg, Minnesota, and graduated from Central Minnesota Christian School. She attended Dordt College in Sioux Center then taught elementary school in Holland, Minnesota.
She married Glenn De Stigter in 1966. They had three children. Once her sons had graduated, Vi re-entered the workforce with the City of Ankeny, working for the Engineering and Building Department and also serving as the recording secretary for both the Planning and Zoning Department and the Board of Adjunct Commission. After 20 years, she retired from the City. Vi was active in her church and in PEO with both her Iowa and Arizona chapters.
Vi was the preeminent host, frequently hosting large gatherings at her homes for various causes and charity events throughout the years, including the annual Weitz Company Employee Christmas parties and, most recently, a 100-person gathering for Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.
Viola is survived by her husband, three sons, and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Friday, May 27 at Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny.

David Charles Clark Woodley

David Charles Clark Woodley, 61, died May 21, 2022, in Bloomington, Indiana. Dave leaves behind his son, Darin; mother, Phyllis Kilpatrick Woodley; and brother, Douglas Woodley (Carrie). He was preceded in death by his father, Merritt D. Woodley.
Dave was a Winterset native who earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from the University of Iowa. While there, he led the Hawkeye Marching Band for two years as drum major and then served as assistant marching band director. He went on to serve as director of athletic bands at the University of Louisville. When his mentor, Dr. Morgan Jones, retired from the University of Iowa, Dave served as the interim director of athletic bands for two years. In 1993, he joined the Indiana University School of Music faculty as associate professor and director of the Marching Hundred and Big Red Basketball Band. He led the Marching Hundred in performing at numerous bowl games, special events, NFL games and appeared at Super Bowl XLVI. Dave’s passion for music, sports and teaching connected him with thousands of students over the 27 years of his leadership. He retired from teaching as a full professor in December of 2021.
Visitation was held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Winterset on Friday, May 27.

Larry L. Graham

Larry L. Graham, 85, died May 18, 2022, at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Larry was born in New Sharon. He retired from Titan Tire after many years of service. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union.
Larry is survived by his daughters, Lori (Ed) Runge and Leslie (Joe) Sawyer; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by five siblings and his wife, Betty Lou.

James ‘Jim’ Gary Althaus

Jim Althaus, 66, of Altoona, died at his home May 23, 2022, from chronic kidney disease. Jim is survived by his children, Jeanette (Gerad) Santana, Amanda Althaus and Matt Althaus; two granddaughters; and a sister. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
A service was held Thursday, May 26 at Merle Hay Funeral Home.

Judith Maureen (Young) Cramer

Judith Maureen (Young) Cramer, 81, died May 18, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. Judy was born in Webster City. She graduated from Stanhope High School in 1959 as valedictorian. Judy moved to Des Moines and worked for City Service Oil Company while attending business college. Judy continued her business career as a credit manager for Ford Motor Credit for 35 years. She married Charles “Larry” Cramer in 1967. They made their home in Beaverdale and later in Johnston where they raised their son.
Judy was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Des Moines Quilting Guild where she had served as secretary. She was a member of a bowling league for more than 40 years. She volunteered for the West Des Moines Elks Lodge and Methodist Hospital Outpatient Surgery, where she logged more than 2,000 hours.
Judy is survived by her husband; son, Robert “Rob” (Tawni) Cramer; two grandchildren; and a brother. She was preceded in death by a twin brother. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Grace Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior. Carol Yvonne Garland

Carol Yvonne Garland died May 19, 2022. She was born in Des Moines. Carol graduated from Johnston High School in 1955, where she met Richard E. Garland. They married in 1956. Carol was a devoted stay-at-home mom and served the Johnston School District in many capacities for more than 20 years.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband and sister. She is survived by four children, Terry (Cheryl), Andrea (Lynn Schreder), Rick (Shelly) and Kristin (Jeff) Soelberg; eight grandchildren; a brother; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation services were May 24 at Dunn’s Funeral Home. A celebration of life service was Wednesday, May 25 at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Johnston.

Robert Charles Bowen

Robert Charles Bowen, 72, died May 20, 2022, at home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Charles City and grew up in Des Moines. He served in the Navy for six years as a corpsman in several stateside hospitals during the Vietnam War. Bob worked at the Des Moines V.A. Hospital for his entire career as a respiratory therapist with his best friends and fishing buddies, Steve Lane and Carl Pace.
Preceding him in death were his sister, Carol, and brothers Dick and Jim. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Jeannine (Peterson) Bowen; son Chad A. Bowen; sister Barb (Walt) Hiltbrunner; a niece and nephews; and two special friends who are considered family, Terry and Bev Heuton. Bob wanted cremation with no funeral. Cheryl Ann Gonseth

Cheryl Ann Gonseth, 72, died May 21, 2022. She graduated from Madrid High School and attended Boone Jr. College. Cheryl married at age 19 and had her first child, Valerie. While that marriage ended in divorce, Cheryl met the love of her life, Steve, and they married in 1974. Steve and Cheryl added to their blended family of four children in 1980, with the addition of Matthew. Cheryl spent most of her working years as an accounting clerk in Des Moines.
Cheryl is survived by her husband; children Lori (Chuck) Keller, Dusty Gonseth and Michaela Coenen, Valerie Bimbi and Hassan Bethea and Darcy Gonseth; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son Matthew, sister Joanie, and nephew Jason.

Joan Angela Hagans

Joan Angela Hagans, 80, died May 8, 2022, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Joan was born in Bayard. She graduated from Scranton Consolidated High School in 1960. After graduating school, she moved to Des Moines, where she worked full time at an insurance company and part-time at Hinky Dinky, where she met Jim Hagans in 1965. They married in 1969, living in Des Moines and having their son in 1972. She worked for Dahl’s at the courtesy counter for 35 years.

Norma L. Soethout

Norma L. Soethout, 79, died May 20, 2022, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Norma was born in Storm Lake and graduated from Newell Community School in 1960. She graduated from business school in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1961. Norma lived and worked in Omaha for three years before moving to Des Moines in 1964. She married Harold D. Soethout in 1968. She worked in the administrative assistant field for numerous years, having worked for Lutheran Social Service of Iowa, Wesley Day Advertising, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa, and Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines before retiring in 2006.
Norma is survived by her husband; children, Dwight (Deanna) Soethout, Heidi (Harry III) Ehmsen, Tyler (Stacy) Soethout; six grandchildren; a sister; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Sievers.

Dorene Janet Mabrier

Dorene Janet Mabrier, 88, died May 22, 2022, at Urbandale Care Center. Dorene was born in Des Moines. She married Kenneth I. Mabrier, and they enjoyed 60 years together. She worked for Heather Manor in Des Moines for 21 years.
Dorene was preceded in death by her husband and brother Curly Haynes. She is survived by her children, Janet Collins, Janice Mabrier and Bruce Mabrier; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

Sally Joann Reed

Sally Joann Reed, 75, died May 20, 2022, at Independence Village Waukee. She was born in Des Moines and employed by Luther Park Health Center as a supervisor of laundry services.
Sally is survived by her children, Jackie Vroegh (Jesse), Steve (Becky) Reed Sr., Will Reed and Ron Reed; grandchildren, Steve Reed Jr., Dustin Allen (Ashley), Skyler Allen (Chris), Brandi (James) Drahos, Amber (Sam) Scott, Payton Reed, Justice Reed; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald A. Painter.

Stephanie Leann Vestal

Stephanie LeAnn Vestal, 62, of Waukee died May 13, 2022, from complications of cancer. Stephanie was born on Feb. 25, 1960. She was predeceased by her son, Nathan, and her parents, Gary Vestal and Myrtie Pezdirc. She is survived by her daughters, Erica and Madison. Services will be announced at a later date.

Leanna Sue Patrick

Leanna Sue Patrick, 71, died May 17, 2022. Sue was born in San Diego, California, and raised in West Des Moines. She was a graduate of Valley High School. Sue is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Smith; brother, Michael Patrick; nephew, Michael Patrick II (Jo Blizzard); niece, Jackie Patrick and grand-niece, Grace Patrick-West. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Patrick; mother, Shirley (Brown) Patrick; and sister, Melody Patrick. Per her wishes, no services are planned.

Arthur Andersen

Arthur Andersen, 82, died May 17, 2022, at his home in West Des Moines. Art was born in Blue Island, Illinois. He developed a passion for skeet shooting at a young age, becoming Nebraska State Champion at 12 years old, and was an active member of New Pioneer Gun Club until his later years. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Thanks to an alphabetical class seating chart, he met his future wife, Judy, whose maiden name was also Andersen. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1965, Art married Judy and shortly after was hired by Phillips Petroleum Company, which became his employer for 37 years. He moved with Judy to Des Moines in 1967 and began raising a family.
He was preceded in death by infant sons, Eric and Andrew. Survivors include his wife; daughters Sue (Steve Carroll) and Anne (Tom Mondragon); and three grandchildren. Services were held Monday, May 23 at St. Mark Lutheran Church.

William Stone

William “Bill” Stone, 81, died May 15, 2022, at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale under the care of the Suncrest Hospice team. Bill was born in San Francisco, California. Upon graduation from the University of California at Berkeley, Bill was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War. Before leaving for duty, he married his high school sweetheart, Gail, in 1962. After completing his service, he began a career in banking in the San Francisco Bay area. He became a Little League umpire and achieved his goal to be an umpire in the Senior League World Series. Bill was also a dedicated lifetime member of Lions Club International for more than 40 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years; children Christine (Jay) Van Kirk and Jeff (Glenna) Stone; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters. Bill will be buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Adel at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7.

Mary Tursi Fuller

Mary Tursi Fuller, 88, died April 23, 2022, at Pine Acres Assisted Living, while under the care of Suncrest Hospice. Mary was born in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School. She was a long-time employee of Des Moines Public Schools, retiring from library services. Mary was active in her community, serving many years on the Broadlawns Hospital Board of Directors.
A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 2 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s honor to Broadlawns Medical Center or any Catholic charity.

Ione Genevieve ShaddUck

Ione G. Shadduck, 98, of West Des Moines, died May 7, 2022. She joined the Women’s Army Corps, then met her first partner, Duffy, who convinced her to enroll at the University of Wisconsin where she graduated with honors. After graduating, she found another partner, Andy, who motivated Ione through four years of teaching, taking courses at USC, Smith, Merrill-Palmer Institute, and pursuing an M.A. and Ph.D. at Michigan State University. They journeyed to Iowa where Ione was recruited by Drake University to be director of the Women’s Physical Education Department. She developed the curriculum for the study of human movement and started the athletic program for women at Drake. After some time, she applied to attend law school and spent the next 26 years with a new partner, Hilda Lee.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 17 at Grace United Methodist Church, Des Moines.

Larry H. Spencer

Larry H. Spencer, 82, died May 21, 2022 on Armed Forces Day. Larry was born in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1958 and Parsons College in Fairfield in 1962 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1963. While on a reconnaissance escort mission over North Vietnam in 1966, Larry was shot down and captured near Thanh Hoa. He spent six days short of seven years as an American prisoner of war in North Vietnam (2,551 days) — the longest of any Iowan during the Vietnam War.
Larry was one of the first 20 POWs to return to the U.S. on Feb. 14, 1973. Upon return to naval duty, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and studied operations research. From 1978-85, he served in Washington, D.C. at the Pentagon on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He retired from the U.S. Navy in March 1985. Larry returned to Carmel, California, in 1987 and moved back to Des Moines in 1995. He was a member and past officer of the Military Officers Association of America and Military Order of the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hobermann Spencer. They were longtime members of Lutheran Church of Hope. Services will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, with visitation one hour prior. Larry will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter with military honors, including a flyover.

Jerrold ‘Jerry’ Keifer

Jerrold “Jerry” Keifer, 80, of West Des Moines, died May 21, 2022 at Bethany Life in Story City. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Springfield. He graduated from Catholic Central High School and attended Ohio State University, later graduating from Wittenberg University with a bachelor’s degree in business. Jerry married Lynne Tingley in 1959 and welcomed three children. He later married Betty Meister in 1990 and helped raise her two daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Randy (Cathy) Keifer, Karen Dickey, Jackie (Dennis) Anhalt, Diane (David) West and Carol (Clinton) Ricker; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A mass will be offered at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Springfield, Ohio, at a date to be determined. A celebration of life will also be planned at a later date. Sandy Kay Lash

Sandy Kay Lash, 78, died May 19, 2022, in Des Moines. She was born in Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines in 1962. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the family business, Buck’s South Des Moines Auto Body and later ran the business after her father retired. She later returned to the workforce at Iowa Auto Damage Appraisers.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Karie Lash; sister, Dixie Dahl; and a host of extended family and friends. Per Sandy’s wishes, she will be cremated, and a private graveside service will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Beverly Jean Musselman

Beverly “Bev” Jean Musselman, 87, died May 22, 2022. She was born in Dexter and resided in West Des Moines for most of her life. Bev worked at IMT from age 18 until retiring at 58. She was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines.
Bev is survived by her nephew, Michael (Nicole) Musselman; nieces Debbie Musselman and Julie (Kevin) Clarken; and numerous great nephews and great great nephews. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. on Friday, May 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, with services at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service. Gregory Allsup

Gregory “Greg” Allsup, 64, of Indianola died May 22, 2022, in Des Moines. Greg worked as a plumber, carpenter and a jack of all trades. He is survived by his wife, Melody; daughters, Michelle (Mike) Colegrobe and Kelley (Wayne) Luft; step-sons, Richard (Tricia) Hommer, Randy Hommer and Robert Hommer; grandchildren, Lara Colegrobe, Andrew Jackson, Rachel and Jordan Hommer; siblings, Pricilla (Grant) Rankin, Bill Allsup and Jeff (Dee) Allsup; aunt, May Allsup; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Esther Allsup, and a brother, Dennis “Red” Allsup. A potluck gathering will be noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at Pickard Park.

Dr. David Alan Brewbaker

Dr. David Brewbaker, 69, died May 19, 2022. He was born in Des Moines. He attended Spring Hill Consolidated Schools until the school’s reorganization sent him to Indianola Community School District. He graduated in 1970 then attended Iowa State University. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1977 and accepted a position with an equine medical center and the Minnesota Zoo. He returned to Warren County and opened a large animal practice in 1978 and later operated a full-service clinic southeast of Indianola until his retirement.

James Edward Hansen

James Edward Hansen, 71, died May 19, 2022, in Des Moines. Jim was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1973, he married Regina (Genie) Ann Schneider. Jim was a mechanic until he “retired,” but continued to work on cars and neighborhood farming equipment. He was a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters for more than 20 years. He also enjoyed being a member of the classic car group, Early Wheels, as well as their neighborhood one-room schoolhouse community center, Hoosier Row.
Jim is survived by his wife; daughter, Lindsay (Mike) Steding; two granddaughters; and five siblings. He was preceded in death by siblings Ron Hansen, Karen Miller and Sharon Rummelhart. Paul L. Vlieger

Beverly Allsup

Beverly Allsup, 92, of Winterset, died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Beverly was born in Indianola. She attended East High School in Des Moines and married James Allsup in 1946. She has been a member of the Worthington Church since 1962 and was also a member of the Earlham Art Group and the Sewing Circle in Winterset.
Beverly is survived by her children, Jimmy, Dennis (Kathy), Kathy, and Becky (Keith); sisters, Judy, Dixie and Roberta; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Riley and John; sisters, Freda, Charlotte and Carolyn; and daughter-in-law, Marla Allsup.

Todd Anthony Van Kooten

Todd Van Kooten, 57, died at home on May 17, 2022, after a four-year battle with cancer. Todd was born in Winterset to Hank and Sherryl (Bruett) Van Kooten. Todd attended Winterset Community Schools. He attended college at University of Northern Iowa, where he received a bachelor’s degree. In 1993, Todd met Tracy Tyer. In 2000, they purchased 20 acres of timber in southeastern Madison County. They married in 2002. In 2005, their son, Joseph Van Kooten, was born.
Todd was employed primarily in the Winterset area, working in HVAC for Madison County Plumbing and Heating and Bill Jensen Heating and Cooling, later working for Winterset Monuments as a stone setter. In 2020, Todd supported Tracy in starting a laser cutting business, Backwoods Laser LLC.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Dean Van Kooten and Linda Sue Van Kooten (infant). He is survived by his wife, son, and sister, Tonja (Bill) Porter and her family. Memorial services were held Saturday, May 21 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel.

Esther Lou Kooyman

Esther Lou Kooyman, 89, died May 14, 2022. She was born in Bussey and graduated from high school there. She married Robert Kooyman 50 years prior to his death in 2004. She worked at Preferred Risk Insurance for a few years.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband; infant daughter Marilyn Jane; brothers Willard, Leonard and Kenneth Wales; and sister Ila Mae Josephs. She is survived by siblings Letha Brinkman, Lora Newton, Verga Hodson, John Wales, and Robert Wales.

Vilda R. Jones

Vilda R. Jones, 97, died May 14, 2022, at Rock Creek Assisted Living in Ankeny. She graduated in 1941 from the high school in Rockford. In 1948, she moved to Minneapolis to attend Minnesota Bible College, where she took Christian education and secretarial courses for two years. In 1950, while attending classes in the morning, she began full time work at Honeywell, a manufacturer of thermostats, remaining there until she married Walter V. Jones in 1952. They moved to Walter’s native Washington state, where together they ministered to congregations in the Puget Sound country. Vilda taught Sunday school there as well as after they returned to the Midwest in 1960 and settled in Des Moines the next year.
Vilda was a Cub Scout, Blue Birds and Campfire leader. She worked part-time at Sears and American Republic Insurance before going to work full time for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, where she did printing and mailing and retired in 1990 after 22 years. Along with her husband, she was a caregiver for 40 years for their daughter, Connie, who had muscular dystrophy. Vilda was a member of the Rising Sun Church of Christ.
Vilda was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters; foster brother; and daughter. She is survived by her son, Greg (Kris); three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and their families.

Chad Tingwald

Chad Tingwald, 45, of Ankeny, died unexpectedly on May 11, 2022. He was born to Dennis Tingwald and Sheila (Freeborn) Russell in Grinnell. He was raised in LeGrand, and moved to Ankeny in 1989 where he graduated in 1995. He married Leslie Walker in 2021. Chad was a fuel dispatch specialist at the Casey’s Store Support Center since October 2008. He also worked various jobs in the auto parts industry.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Kelsey Tingwald; step-children, Hannah Manchester (Curtis) and Spencer Walker (Kevin); parents; sister, Angie (Tingwald) Porter; niece; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his cats.
A memorial service was held Thursday, May 19 at Ankeny Free Church.

Lauren Cloys Border

Lauren Cloys Border, 75, of Ankeny died May 14, 2022, at Methodist Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Erie, Illinois, and graduated from Erie High School in 1964. Lauren married Cindy Muhlenburg in 1987. He worked for 13 years for the Rock Island Railroad and was a painter for more than 20 years with E-Z painting in Ames.
Lauren is survived by his wife; his children, Steve Border, Shawn (Amy) Swaim, and Tarah Cox; five siblings; and grandchildren, Brayden Koltin, Kinsley Swaim and William Cox. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kent; granddaughter, Nevaeh Swaim, and numerous nieces and nephews. Per Lauren’s wishes, there will be no services.

Richard ‘Dick’ Gene Rasmussen

Richard Rasmussen, 65, died May 20, 2022, at Mercy West Hospital in Des Moines. He was born in Audubon. Dick was a sergeant in the Army from 1954-1957. He served in Germany during peacetime. Richard married Suzan Gilchrist in 1959.
Dick graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) with a bachelor’s degree in education and later completed his master’s degree in administration at Drake University. He taught at South Hamilton of Jewell for 10 years. In 1972, Dick and Sue moved their family to Ankeny. He taught physical education at Neveln Junior High and then business classes at Ankeny High School. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. He poured a lot of time and devotion into fundraising to bring the dream of Miracle League Baseball to Ankeny.
Dick amassed a wide variety of awards and accolades: National High School Coach of the Year in both softball (1986) and basketball (1993) and was honored to have the Ankeny softball field named the Dick Rasmussen Field in 2014.
Dick is survived by his wife, Sue; children Jeff (Elaine), Greg, Brad (Nicolee), Julie; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 25 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

David Vols

David Vols, 73, died May 16, 2022. David grew up on a farm in Brooklyn. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in ag business. He worked for the Iowa DOT as an appraiser. He married Marlene Witt in 1974 and had one daughter.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Christine (Jeff) Weiland; grandsons, Aston and Carter; sisters, Ilene Hagen and Lillian Sesma. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald. A visitation was held Thursday, May 19 at Memorial Services of Iowa in Ankeny.

David Miles Stout

David Miles Stout, 71, of Ankeny, died Jan. 21, 2021, at home after a brief but fierce battle with metastatic melanoma. David is survived by his wife, Lynhon Stout; daughter, Jennifer (Roni) Stout; grandchildren, Jack and Olivia Kagan; brother, Harry (Mern) Stout; nieces, nephews and loving friends.
A celebration of life will be held 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at Memorial Services of Iowa, 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd., Ankeny. A time of sharing will be at 5:15 p.m.

Dr. George A Hofmann

Dr. George A Hofmann, 84, of Johnston, died May 13, 2022. George was born in Burlington. He moved with his family to Alliance, Nebraska, where he attended Chadron State University and obtained his bachelor of science degree. He furthered his education at Colorado State University to become a veterinarian.
In 1961, he married Jean Nora Braddock. They lived in Fort Collins, Colorado. George was employed by the USDA as a meat inspector. He also worked with the Horse Protection Program, monitored puppy mills and, after retirement, worked for Hy-Vee.
He is survived by his wife; children Lynette (Louis) Gornick, Sharon (Larry Ludwig) Hofmann, Wayne and Kathy; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a brother. Funeral services were Friday, May 20 at Iles Brandt’s Funeral Home in Dallas Center.

Ronald Dwayne Rosenberg

Ronald Dwayne Rosenberg, 90, died May 17, 2022. Ron was born in Grimes. He married Jodean Sly in 1951. They made their home in Grimes where they raised their two sons. Ron was a member of Teamsters Local #147 and later owned and operated JR Trucking, retiring in 2017. He served on the Grimes City Council in the early 1990s and was a 70-plus year member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Ron is survived by two sons, Keith (Pam) and Denny (Rita); sister, Phyllis; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and great-grandchildren, Maddie and Zoey Mickle.

Frances ‘Misty’ Mae Trotter

Frances “Misty” Mae Trotter, 87, of Johnston died at home Wednesday, May 11, 2022. She worked at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge where she retired after many years of service. She was also a long-term member of the American Business Women Association. She is survived by several step-nieces and step-nephews, as well as many adopted family members.
A memorial graveside service was held Monday, May 23 at McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale.

Carl Thomas Schwab

Carl Thomas Schwab, 75, died May 17, 2022. He was born in Clinton and graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1965. He then attended the University of Iowa where he was active in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1969. Carl married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Young, in 1970. He began his career as an accountant and then worked at Housby Mack. Later he purchased the Freightliner of Des Moines dealership, which he owned and managed until retiring in 2014. Carl enjoyed golf and was a lifelong member of Hyperion Field Club.

Heidi Kupka

Heidi Kupka, 49, died unexpectedly on May 13, 2022. Heidi was born in Charles City to Mark and Bonnie (Bonita) Kupka. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1992. Heidi graduated from Iowa Central Community College with an associate’s degree. Heidi spent her working life in a variety of positions including many years as a laundry aide and most recently working in guest services at Johnston Hy-Vee. Heidi was a faithful member of Des Moines Mennonite Church.
She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother; sister, Tina Moore; brother, Kevin Kupka (Kristie Gray); and two nephews, Zach Moore and Alex Moore. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, May 21 at Des Moines Mennonite Church.

Rose and Gary Gray

Joint graveside services will be held for Rose and Gary Gray on Friday, May 27 at 12 p.m. at Lower Blue Point Cemetery, south of Grinnell on 55th Street in Poweshiek County — not to be confused with Upper Blue Point Cemetery on the same road but farther north.
Gary Gene Gray, 90, died Sept. 30, 2021. He was born in Grinnell and graduated from Alden High School. He began working for the IDOT. He also helped his dad, who ran a circuit of movie theaters in small towns, where he met Sharon Thornburg. They were married in 1954 and raised three daughters in Des Moines.
Rose Sharon Gray, 84, died Nov. 5, 2021. She was born in Pleasantville. She graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1954 and soon after married. She worked for Look Magazine for a time and spent many years at the Iowa Film Depot, repairing film reels and sending them back out to theaters.
Gary and Sharon are survived by three daughters: Cindy Howell (Fred), Linda Carlson (Ric) and Christi Gray (Rich Kelley); five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
