February 9, 1924 – October 30, 2014
Sylvia Tow, 90, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines from Lewy Body Dementia. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 3 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Norway Cemetery, Norway, IA.
Sylvia was born on February 9, 1924 in Madison, SD to Richard and Sarah Bergheim and grew up on the family farm near Howard, SD. After graduation from Howard High School, she attended Dakota State College in Madison and then moved to Cedar Rapids, IA. Sylvia was united in marriage to Howard Tow, March 11, 1945 in Los Angeles, CA, following his discharge from the U.S. Navy.
The couple made their home in Fairfax and Storm Lake, IA. In 1956, the family moved to Mankato, MN where her husband continued his career with Continental Western Insurance Company. While on northern Minnesota vacations, Sylvia braved a few rocky fishing boat rides, but enjoyed ‘frying up the catch’ back at the resort cabin for the family.
In 1967, Howard and Sylvia moved back to Iowa where she worked as a secretary in the Iowa Legislature for several years. While living in each location, she enjoyed meeting new friends, playing bridge, golfing, ballroom dancing, bowling, cooking and curling. Sylvia was a member of the West Des Moines Methodist Church and a Charter Member of the Sons of Norway, serving a number of years as lodge secretary.
Always active, she was thrilled to hit a hole-in-one at Willow Creek Golf Club on May 2, 1989. She enjoyed baking chocolate chip cookies with her grandchildren on weekend visits and lefsa at Christmas.
Sylvia is survived by her son, Tom Tow of Clive; two grandchildren, Matthew Tow and Stefanie Tow (Ray Cooper); two great grandchildren, Cody and Grant; a daughter, Susan (John) Ellis of Salida, CO; three grandchildren, Seth (Rachel) Augustine, Elijah (Linnea) Ellis and Caleb Ellis; a brother, Richard (Jocelyne) Bergheim of Venice, FL; a sister, Norma Selix of Huron, SD; a very special niece, Nancy (Torstein) Lund; nephew, Jim Dunlop; cousins, Beverly Hayden and Odell (Glendoris) Bergheim; special family friend, Celeste Eckert; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be remembered by her long time bridge friends, Donna, Marcella and Aggie.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, her parents, one sister, and four brothers, two of whom died during infancy.
A special thank you to all the medical professionals who cared for Sylvia over the past few years including those at Trinity Center and UnityPoint Hospice. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Center at Luther Park, 1555 Hull Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50316 or Sons of Norway, 1236 71st. Street, Des Moines, IA 50311.
