Jay Mallas, age 86, of 104 Monona Street, died at his home on October 27, 2014.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 31, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, with Gary Silver officiating. Following the service, Jay will be cremated and his cremains will be buried in the Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.
Jay Louis Mallas was born in Boone on October 19, 1928, the son of Jack (Yannis) and Goldia (Coleman) Mallas (Moulavasilis).
He graduated from Boone High School in 1948 and received his BS degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
On August 15, 1948, Jay married Patricia Larrew in Boone. The couple lived in Waterloo and Chicago, Illinois, before returning to Boone. While in Waterloo, Jay worked as an efficiency expert, and in Chicago, he worked as a plant superintendent, both in the beef industry.
Jay taught school in Adel and Boone. In Boone, Jay was a middle school educator and coached high school track.
In earlier years, Jay served with the U.S. Army and the Iowa National Guard.
He coached Boone Little League and Babe Ruth. Jay and wife Pat, owned a detasselling business for over 19 years.
As a building contractor, Jay built homes in Waterloo and Boone. He was a family man.
His hobbies included oil painting, especially outdoor scenes. Jay obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying airplanes.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruby Knobbender, brothers, Peter Mallas, Paul Mallas, Robert Mallas, and John Mallas.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Boone; brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Mallas of Corning; sisters Anna (Dale) Larson of Boone and Helen Aurand of Waterloo; brother-in-law Richard Larrew of Evansdale; five children: daughters, Launie J. (Douglas) Sorem of Boone, and Terrie L. Buckmaster of Independence, Missouri, sons, John T. (Shawn) Mallas of Independence, Missouri, Andrew ‘Jay’ (Arlene) Mallas of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Michael W. (Julie) Mallas of Ames.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Lynn (Jay) Bosler of Kearney, Missouri, Joel Kupke of Houston, Texas, J. Craig (Krista) Mallas Independence, Missouri, Kelly (Phil) Irwin of Frankfort, Illinois, Chris Mallas of Independence, Missouri, Kyle (Ashley) Buckmaster of Wichita Falls, Texas, Joshua ‘Jay’ Mallas of Wichita, Falls, Texas, Patricia (Steve) Smith of Independence, Missouri, Elizabeth (Lance) Richardson, Wichita Falls, Texas, Rachel Mallas, Danielle Mallas of Ames, Iowa; eight great grandchildren: Kyre Bosler, Hailey Mallas, Leah Smith, Kaitlyn Mallas, Douglas Buckmaster, Lachlan Buckmaster, Nichole Smith, and Korbin Richardson.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 2 to 8 with family present from 6 to 8. Visitation continues on Friday from 9 a.m. to service time.
