Darrell Jay Eshelman, age 78, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Southern Hills Specialty Care while in hospice.
Darrell was born on March 27, 1936 at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA to Donald Howard and Genevieve (Jean) Seiberling Eshelman He attended grade school in Altoona until seventh grade when he transferred to Bondurant High School to take Agriculture classes and belong to the FFA.
He enjoyed sports and played basketball, baseball, and football. He graduated from BHS with the class of 1954. After graduation he continued to the help farm the family homeplace.
Darrell and Ladene Morris were married at Bondurant Christian Church on March 20, 1955. For the first ten years of their marriage, Darrell both farmed and worked in manufacturing at Western Tool & Stamping. In 1965 they bought a farm and moved to Virginia Township near New Virginia, IA. They are members of the Osceola Christian Church. Darrell was baptized the same day as his children. He and his wife celebrated fifty-nine and a half years of marriage together.
At their farm in New Virginia, Darrell raised livestock and row crop. He was also very active in the community helping with projects and participating in the Lions Club and on the Virginia Manor Board. He also gave his time to the New Virginia Christian Church serving as Chairman of the Board, Elder, Treasurer, and as a trustee. He continued to enjoy sports and following the I35 teams. He also enjoyed hunting, trapping and visiting Prairie Meadows.
He is survived by his wife; son, Edgar Morris Eshelman of Osceola, IA, and daughter, Reinee Rae Hildebrant and her husband, William Paul of Springfield, IL; granddaughters, Kari Heath and her huband Jon of Durham, NC, Sandra Pitcher and her husband Jeremiah of Stanford, IL, and Dru Jennifer Eshelman and her fiance, Vamsi Krishna Yemadabthni of Des Moines, IA; great grandson, Teagan Pitcher; great granddaughter, Emma Heath; sister, Donna Jean Frakes of Bondurant, IA; brothers, Jerry Eshelman of Des Moines, IA and Kevin Eshelman of Altoona, IA; sister-in-law, Karen Mark of Des Moines, IA and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents and brother.
