Q: What options do I have to treat the pain I’m having?

Posted October 22, 2014 in Advice Column, Boone

A: Pain is a devastating public health problem. According to the American Chronic Pain Association, pain is the No. 1 cause of adult disability in the U.S. Often, medications alone aren’t enough to treat chronic pain. Some treatments, when combined with medication, may be more effective than medications alone. Treatments offered may include local anesthetics, sometimes combined with a corticosteroid, that may be injected around nerve roots or into muscles and joints to relieve irritation, swelling and muscle spasm. If a group of nerves — called a ganglion or plexus — causes pain to a body region, injections with local anesthetics may be useful for blocking the pain in that area.
