Martin “Marty” Thelen, age 57, of Carroll passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Lector for the Mass will be his brother Tony Thelen. Gift bearers will be his grandchildren: Caleb, Cooper, Cyler, and Nolan. Eucharistic Minister will be Peg Scheidt and Mass Server will be Austin Venteicher. Music for the Mass will be by Barb McDermott as organist and the Holy Spirit Choir. Casket bearers will be K.R. Buck, Tracy Buck, Joe Clark, Mike Mielk, Joel Harris, and Richard Pudenz.

Born on December 5, 1956 in Carroll he was the son of Lenus “Leny” and Jean (Schelle) Thelen. He grew up in Carroll and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1975. He attended Iowa State University and then worked for Farner Bocken for several years. He was married to Lisa Vonnahme on May 28, 1982 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. To this union were born two children: Wesley and Matthew. The couple owned and operated the Duck Inn in Carroll for 10 years. Marty went to work for the Graphic Edge in 1995 as a screen printer and later became production supervisor. Marty was re-married to Susan Cressler on August 12, 2000 at Lake View. Marty was an avid fisherman and birdwatcher. Over the years Marty went on many fishing trips to Canada and northeast Iowa. Marty played slow pitch softball for many years for the Gusto Grabbers and Don’s Place and he enjoyed the annual Carroll Bud Open. Marty loved the Minnesota Twins. He was member of the Iowa Ornithologists Union, Ducks Unlimited, and Holy Spirit Parish.

Marty is survived by his wife Susan of Carroll; two sons: Wesley Thelen and his wife Mandy of Carroll and Matthew Thelen and his wife Kelly of Estherville; four grandchildren: Caleb, Cooper, Cyler, and Nolan; two step-daughters: Kristy Cressler of Omaha and Jayme Gordon and her husband John of Salt Lake City, Utah; a step-son Scott Cressler of Chicago; two sisters: Shirley Neary and her husband Dan of Omaha and Karen Phillips and her husband Jim of Carroll; three brothers: Ed Thelen and his wife Linda of Spirit Lake, Rob Thelen of Carroll, and Tony Thelen and his wife Sheila of Urbandale; his mother-in-law Mardell Schade of Lake View; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marty was preceded in death by his parents.
