Mary Lou Willits, 85, passed away Oct. 10, 2014, at WesleyLife Hospice in Des Moines. Born March 18, 1929, Mary Lou grew up the daughter of Dr. John G. and Mrs. Margaret Lela Nash in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended Oskaloosa High School and Drake University
For most of her adult life, Mary Lou lived in Windsor Heights. Her life was dedicated to volunteering for causes important to her; spending time with great friends, raising three children; and lovingly caring for her six grandchildren. Season after season, Mary Lou would treat her grandchildren to lunch and ice cream at the Bauder Pharmacy soda fountain and then a play at the Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre.
Mary Lou is survived by her children, James (Diana) Willits; Peggy (Tom) Burke; and Robert (Tracy) Willits; and grandchildren Courtney & Ashley Willits; Colin (Amanda) & Jake Burke; and Emma & Lucas Willits. Her parents and a brother, Joseph, preceded Mary Lou in death.
A celebration of Mary Lou’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Iles Dunn’s Chapel. Visitation with the family will be held from 9-10 a.m. with services beginning at 10 a.m. Following the service family and friends are cordially invited for lunch at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club beginning at 11:30 a.m. Mary Lou will be laid to rest near her parents during a private service at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
