Arthur Downs

Arthur Lee Downs, 80, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr., Adel, Iowa.

Born August 15, 1934 in Cannelton, Indiana, Arthur Lee Downs was the son of George and Edith (Anderson) Downs. He enlisted and proudly served his country in the United State Marine Corps and earned the rank of Corporal. He served during the Korean War and prepared the F-4U Corsair for missions. Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Arthur was united in marriage to Constance Sue Cunningham on May 6, 1956 in Prescott, Iowa. The couple made their home in Polk County and raised their ten children. Arthur made a career working as a Machinist for Des Moines Eagle Iron Works and retired from John Deere. He was an outdoorsman, avid hunter and fisherman, and was knowledgeable in all areas and could fix anything. He always enjoyed visiting with fellow military members; even if he hadn’t met them before. Most of all, Arthur was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and his family held a special place in his heart.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; children, Steven (Johnna) Downs, Cindy (Dan) Disko, Pamela (Gregg) Galan, David (Kristie) Downs, Jeffery Downs, Michael Downs, Jonathan (Tara) Downs, James Downs, Nicholas (Nick Maricich) Downs, and Amanda Reed; 29 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters; sister-in-law, Jeanie Downs; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernon Ray and Tom Downs, and a niece, Lauren.
