Mary Ellen Bregar, 96, passed from this life on Saturday, October 11, 2014, surrounded by her family at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, at the Evangelical Free Church in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.

Mary was born on August 31, 1918 in Lovilia, IA, to Bert and Lucy Della (Vaughn) Oswalt. The family moved to Madrid, where they made their home. In 1934, Mary was united in marriage to August Bregar and to this union, six children were born. During their beautiful 63-year marriage, Mary and August shared many fond memories; called each other ‘Toby’ and she was his ‘Pootsle Potzel’. A member of Evangelical Free Church and life-long resident of Madrid. Mary was a homemaker all her life, and loved raising her family. She absolutely loved babies, all babies, cooking big meals, being with family, having company and her pies were ‘to die for’. Mary shined in many ways and was known for her amazing homemade noodles. She also enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and collecting plates, and loved the color pink to a different level. Mary was a loving, caring and giving mother, grandmother and friend; she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Kathryn (Robert) Merkel, Kenny (Betty) Bregar and Mary Ann Grantz all of Madrid, Billy (Sandy) Bregar of San Jose, CA, and Betty Lou (Bill) Dodd and Johnny (Chrisy) Bregar both also of Madrid; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, two sisters, and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Bregar’s name to Evangelical Free Church in Madrid.
