Trick or treat

Posted October 08, 2014 in Community Featured, Greene County

Oct 2013 - Mar 2014 024Superheroes and princesses, dragons and Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and teddy bears, pirates and pumpkins, Barbies and ladybugs, ballerinas and pirates. Halloween is coming soon, and children will be transformed into their favorite characters for a night of magical fun.

Children love to dress in costume and go door to door filling their bags with candy on Halloween. Another event children love is the annual Trick or Treat Around the Square, sponsored by local Chamber businesses, Jefferson Parks and Recreation and the Jefferson Public Library.

This year’s event will be held Thursday, Oct. 30. From 4-5 p.m., children may go to the Community Center to decorate pumpkins and play games. Pre-register your child for this activity by calling 386-3412  From 5-7 p.m., children may go around the downtown square to trick or treat at local, participating businesses and the Jefferson Public Library.

A special treat awaits children at the library. Each year, a different children’s book is brought to life in a short skit in the library basement. “Which book will it be this year?” asks a child. “It’s always a surprise. You’ll just have to come and see,” answers the librarian.

In previous years, children’s books such as “The Wizard of Oz,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs” and “The Monster at the End of the Book” have been acted out for the children who attended the Halloween event.  Sometimes it is in the form of a puppet show. Other times, librarians and volunteers dress in costume to act out the story.

Children may also trick or treat inside the library and sign up for a prize drawing. The prize might give you a “scare” and is really something to crow” about. Can you guess what it is?

The whole Halloween event is a wonderful family outing. It’s great to see the little ones all dressed in costume streaming around the downtown area, taking in all the Halloween activities that are planned especially for them.

Other activities in October in the children’s department include a scarecrow scavenger hunt, fall trivia challenge, and autumn “make and take” crafts.
