A nice grilled wrap hits the spot for a quick and healthy lunch.

It was the moment I had been waiting for. The new restaurant, Mixed, had opened. Within just a few days of the grand opening, my family and I attended for dinner.

Based purely on the name, I expected lots of healthy options and mainly salads or vegetarian meal choices. When we walked into the brightly lit, new restaurant, I realized that I couldn’t have been more wrong with my expectations. The large, dynamic menu fills the wall to the right of the entrance and includes not only unique salad and soup choices but also paninis, sandwiches, wraps and even breakfast (served only in the morning). I was shocked, amazed and excited to see so many choices before me.

With a lot to ponder, my family and I stepped aside and thought about we wanted before stepping up to the counter and ordering our meals. My daughter was able to get a kids meal with a cold meat sandwich and a fruit cup, my husband chose the Club Six salad, and I decided on the Caesar in a Blanket wrap with a tomato basil wrap and romaine lettuce.

I loved how each of us ordered off the menu, but were able to make our selection truly our own. In true toddler style, my daughter requested the crust be cut off her sandwich. I was able to choose my sauce, lettuce and wrap, and my husband could choose his dressing.

Once our meals were paid for, we took them to a nearby table next to the soda fountain. My daughter chose a juice box with her meal, and I was able to get a flavored water in place of soda. There was also the option of Caribou coffee, lemonade and iced tea in the fountain.

Across from us was a little bar of extras: almonds, granola, sunflower seeds, croutons and tortilla strips. Lots of diners who had chosen a salad for their meal were personalizing their dinners.

Finally, I dug into my grilled wrap and loved my first bite. The chicken was warm and juicy and olives added an unexpected taste. The egg made it feel hearty and filling without making it bland. By the look of our empty plates, it seemed everyone was as impressed with the food as I was.

As we cleaned our plates and headed for the door, more people poured in. Mixed is a great addition to the West Des Moines area and a wonderful place for a healthy meal.
