Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations

Posted October 08, 2014 in Community Featured, Des Moines West

This is the mission that the risen Lord gave to His church (Matthew 28:18), and it is what Providence Reformed Church is seeking to do in Des Moines. Our congregation exists first and foremost to worship and adore the living God who first loved us when we were only His enemies and even reconciled us to Himself by means of the sacrificial death of His Son, Jesus. But we also exist to call other sinners to be reconciled to God through faith in the only Savior, so that they may then join us in the worship of God and grow with us as His redeemed children.

“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

So many people claim to be disciples, or followers of Christ, but have nothing to do with the visible church — the place where God gathers His people together for the worship of His holy name; the unique place where God nourishes and grows His children into maturity by spiritually feeding us with Christ through the preaching of His word and the administration of the sacraments (baptism and communion). If you claim to be a Christian — a disciple or follower of Christ — you belong every Sunday in the public gathering of believing sinners where you may worship God according to His word and grow in your discipleship by means of that same word. And your children belong in worship, too.

For thousands of years before Christ came into this world, God included children within His church. With the coming of Christ, God gave us no indication that He suddenly stopped this gracious inclusion of our children. In fact, the apostle Paul told Christian fathers to bring up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Jesus (Ephesians 6:4). At Providence Reformed Church, we aim to include our children not only in the worship of God but also in the discipleship/training of God’s people.

We invite you to come and join us for worship at Providence Reformed Church, where you and your children may begin to live and grow as disciples of Christ through the saving and sanctifying grace of God.
