Anyone who has children knows there is often a “honeymoon period” in the first few weeks after school starts in which the difficulties of past years (if there were any) recede into memory, and the new school year holds bright promise. The teacher is still in a good mood, the kids are still excited about new school clothes and nobody’s notebook has fallen apart or been filled with doodles of helicopters yet.
But as the school year progresses and the workload gets more intense, kids can start to lose their way a bit academically and sometimes need some help to get their bearings. That’s why The Friends of the West Des Moines Library was generous enough to purchase our library a subscription to www.Tutor.com, an online service which allows kids in middle school and up to chat live with a trained tutor. Many of the tutors are teachers or education majors, and all have been specially trained to be effective online helpers. Tutor.com is a well-known service and is even on state contract in several states and the Department of Defense.
The service is free, but a West Des Moines Public Library Card is needed to log in.
