Join the Friends of the Franklin Avenue Library for their quarterly meeting on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

“Star Wars” Reads Day
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2 p.m.
“Star Wars” Reads Day strikes again. Join us as we celebrate reading with activities, games and crafts from 2-3:30 p.m. Come dressed as your favorite “Star Wars” character. Ages 3-12.

Closed for in-service day
Monday, Oct. 13, all day
All branches of the Des Moines Public Library will be closed for a staff in-service day.

Franklin Evening Book Discussion
Tuesday, Oct. 14, 6:30 p.m.
We will discuss “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” by Edward Kelsey Moore. Copies of the book are available at the information desk.

T.G.I.F.F. Thank Goodness It’s Friday at Franklin Book Sale
Friday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m.  -5 p.m.
Please join us on these special Fridays for the TGIFF Book Sale. The Franklin meeting room will be filled with great books at great prices.

Artsy Kids – Duct Tape Creations
Wednesday, Oct. 22, 4 p.m.
Use your creativity to make a lasting piece of art or something practical like a wallet out of duct tape. This program is for kids in grades three – eight and requires preregistration.

Free Advice for Your Device
Saturday, Oct, 25, 10 a.m.
Get the lowdown on your library’s downloadables. Bring your mobile device (smartphone, tablet or e-reader) to one of our classes and get some advice and help installing the library’s apps for e-books, downloadable audiobooks and e-magazines. Classes and apps are all free. Your gadget must have basic setup done (out of the box, set up, passwords entered, charged and know the basics) as a prerequisite to this class. You will need your library card and PIN, and you may need the password for the App Store on your device. Pre-register.

Furry Tales
Saturday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m.
Stop by the library to sign up for a 10-minute slot to read a favorite story to therapy dog Scout. Sharing stories with Scout is a fantastic way to practice reading skills and make a furry friend at the same time.

Teen Book Discussion
Monday, Oct. 27, 4 p.m.
Come and enjoy some pizza and talk about the funny book “Schooled” by Gordon Korman. Teens in grades six through 12 can find copies of the book and sign up for this program at the information desk.

Harry Potter Party
Saturday, Nov. 1, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Attention all muggles! The first Harry Potter book came out more than 17 years ago, but the boy wizard is just as popular as ever.  Come to the library from 1:30-2:30 p.m. for games, crafts and trivia related to Hogwarts and all things Harry Potter.
