Richard (Dick) Malliet passed away on September 26, 2014 surrounded by his family at Deerfield Health Center in Urbandale.

Richard was born on September 21, 1926. He graduated from Kelley High School and was only able to complete a semester at Iowa State before joining the Navy. He graduated from University of Iowa (BA Commerce), Morningside College (BS Education), and Drake University (MA Guidance Counseling).

He taught clerical courses at Drake, and instructed bankers. Richard was a High School Guidance Counselor at Lincoln High for most of his professional life.

Next to family, Richard loved being around young people. He helped them discover their talents and pursue their goals. He touched the lives of thousands of students at Lincoln High School.

He enjoyed history, travel, gardening, and following his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Richard loved to sing. He belonged to his parish choirs and a variety of music groups all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Margaret Malliet. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, June (Stumpf) Malliet; his children, Dianne (Bill) Cordaro of Kansas City, MO; Dan (Catherine) Malliet of Ames, IA; and Patrick Malliet of Deltona, Florida; grandchildren, Christina (Ryan) Murphy; Katie (Chris) Hoyt; Tony Cordaro; Alex Malliet; and Natalie Malliet; great grandchildren, Quinn Murphy and Billy Hoyt. Survivors also include sisters, Marie Hogan and Maxine Long and many very special nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Monday, September 29th, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustin Catholic Church at 545 42nd Street in Des Moines. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.

Richard’s family wishes to thank the many wonderful nurses, CNA’s, and healthcare team at Deerfield Health Center.
