Gladys was born April 11, 1923 to Anton and Margrethe (Christensen) Winther in Dagmar, MT. Before moving to Iowa, Gladys built and operated “The White Spot Café,” her own restaurant in Medicine Lake, MT. Gladys and her son Billy moved to Iowa in 1952 where she met Donald “Kelly” Geneser. The family made their home in the Granger-Madrid area where they raised their four children. In 1959 Kelly was tragically killed in an automobile accident, leaving Gladys to raise the children on her own. Over the following years she worked as a bookkeeper for Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, made countless wedding cakes and other baked goods, and eventually became the manager of the Woodward Golf Course. It was there that she met Virgil York. They married in 1975 and moved to Bentonville, AR where they lived for 10 years before returning to Iowa to be near family. Gladys loved to spend time with her family and friends, especially the yearly family vacations to Minnesota. Board games, bridge, golf, bowling, crocheting and supporting the Atlanta Braves where some of her favorite pastimes.

Survivors include her children: C.W. “Bill” (Kris) Geneser of Madrid, Rick (Rhonda) Geneser of Ankeny, Donna (Randy) Burkhart of Madrid, Linda (Dale) Burkhart of Woodward; grandchildren: Jim (Jessica) Geneser, Matt (Terry) Geneser, Michael (Sheila) Geneser, Brandon (Jennifer) Burkhart, Bobbi Jo Burkhart, Brett (Erika) Burkhart, Brad (Valerie) Burkhart, Ryan (Nadine) Burkhart; 14 (soon to be 15) great grandchildren; brother, Earl Winther of Spokane, WA; sister, Betty James of Van Meter; and many nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her husbands: Donald R. Geneser in 1959 and Virgil L. York in 2005; and two siblings: Arlie Winther and Erlis Kleeman.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Sunday, September 28, 2014 at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church where a Rosary will begin at 6pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Malachy’s Catholic Church. On-line condolences are welcome at
