Diana Spencer

Diana Lee Spencer, 71, of Ankeny passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2014 after a courageous battle with liver disease.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday October 1st at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (206 S.W. Walnut St.). A visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday September 30th at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home. (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd)

Diana was born in Rockford, IL on September 2, 1943 to Commadore and Edna Brewster. She grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and graduated from Marshalltown Senior High School after which she went on to take classes at AIB in Des Moines. While employed at Lennox Industries in Marshalltown Diana met and later married Richard Spencer on October 3, 1965. After the birth of their children, Diana focused on being a homemaker and also volunteered in the community. She served on the Marshalltown Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered in the Methodist church. Later in Richard’s career, he and Diana moved to McKinney, TX where they spent 15 years. Eventually they relocated back to Ankeny, Iowa to be closer to family.

For never having any formal coaching, Diana was an exceptional athlete. She enjoyed and competed in bowling, tennis, golf, and could even be found playing catch or shooting baskets with her children. One thing she enjoyed for many years was playing bridge. Late in her life she attained the prestigious status of Life Master in duplicate bridge.

Above all, Diana absolutely loved her family. She was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. During recent years, she spent much of her time attending her grandchildren’s various sporting and school events.

She is survived by her husband Richard, daughter Jody (Todd), son Barry (Sara), and grandchildren: Kalie, Nathan, Madelyn, Hannah, and Benjamin. She also has a sister, Phyllis (Bob) McCoy and numerous nieces and nephews. Diana has set an example for her family to follow that they will never forget.

Memorials may be directed to Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
