Beebe Lester Akers, 93, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Fountain West Care Center, West Des Moines. He was born November 6, 1920, in Colfax County, Nebraska.
Beebe was proud of his service on the destroyer, Anthony, with the Pacific U. S. naval fleet during World War II.
He studied farm operations and vocational agriculture on the GI bill at Iowa State University. He farmed in the Orient, Iowa, area for 55 years. He was active in the Farm Bureau. While serving on the Southwest Iowa Rural Water Association (SIRWA) board, he was instrumental in bringing safe, abundant water to the farms of southwest Iowa.
Beebe was active as a deacon at the Hill of Zion Church. He served on the Zion Consolidated School Board, both as a member and as financial secretary.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice; his sons Brian (Vika) and Kevin (Faye); daughters Nora (Donald) Breniman and Juanita (Jay) Clure; nine grandchildren (Sara, Laurie, Lynne, Crystal, Isaac, Abigail, Rebekah, Mara, Anne Marie) and four great grandchildren (Evan, Lily, James, Ashleigh). He was preceded in death by his parents Beebe and Anna, brother Allen, and sister Juanita.
Services will be held Saturday, October 4, at Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman, Des Moines. Family will begin greeting friends at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m.
