image001Settle in — fall is here. It’s time for crisp leaves, a cup of tea, a good book and some exciting events happening at the Johnston Public Library. Mark your calendar for these not-to-miss events in October at JPL.

Johnston Public Library is hosting a costume swap Oct. 4-6. On Oct. 4, anyone who donated a costume in September can come to the library to choose a free costume. On Oct. 5-6, the costume swap is open to all. Come to the library and select a costume from the pool of donated costumes, while supplies last.

After you’ve participated in the JPL costume swap, try out your new Halloween duds Monday, Oct. 27th from 6-7:30 p.m. at our annual Pumpkin Patch Party. Wear your costume and join us for treats, stories, games and a craft. Feel free to arrive any time between 6 and 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome; register online at the events page at or by calling the library at 515-278-5233.

Also happening in October, the library will be starting a come and go knitting club. Novel Knitters will meet on the first Thursday of every month from 5-8 p.m. Feel free to drop in and learn how to knit from others or teach or learn new patterns. Knitters of all experience levels are welcome; please bring your own knitting supplies. No registration is necessary.

Now is also the time to look ahead to upcoming holidays celebrations. What’s the best part of holiday cooking? The sides, of course. Stop by Johnston Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m. for a free cooking class featuring delicious holiday side dishes. RSVP online or by phone.

Finally, close out the month with an author visit at JPL. Iowa author Linda McCann will be at the library to talk about her new book, “Prohibition in Eastern Iowa.” McCann will discuss the 13-year span of time known as Prohibition through the lens of eastern Iowa townspeople, including the farmers who grew the corn used to make the illegal liquor, the bootleggers who trafficked it and the gangsters who sold it. For more information about these programs go to and click on the events page.
