New programs

Posted September 24, 2014 in Community Featured, Boone

We have a ton of fun and informative programs coming up in September at the library.

We are excited to present some completely new programs in the children’s department. Starting in September, the children’s department will host afterschool book clubs run by the readers themselves. Each program will be held on Monday and Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. Each week, come prepared to talk about any book in some popular series in children’s fiction. Of course, feel free to join if you have not read any of the books — the more the merrier.  This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about books from others and learn what made the book great or not so great. It may inspire you to check that book out. It’s also a chance to meet new friends, get crafty and have fun. There are three different categories; come to one, come to all.

We at the library are conscious of the fact that everyone learns differently. We strive to provide a variety of wide-ranging programming in order to reach as many people in the community as possible. In light of this fact, we are introducing Sensory Storytime in the children’s department.  This storytime is a bite-sized, interactive and educational program that can be enjoyed by all children but is especially designed for children who have difficulty sitting through one of the library’s other storytimes. This fun program combines books, songs and movement to stimulate all five senses and promote learning.

The Sensory Storytime will take place on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and again at 6:45 p.m. Prior sign up for this storytime is required and space is limited, so please contact the children’s department by phone at 515-432-3727 ext. 3. You may also sign up at your next visit to the library.

The Friends Fall Booksale will return in October. Come to the library Oct. 17 and 18 to receive great bargains on gently-used books, CDs, DVDs and other fun stuff. This year is slightly different since the first day of the sale will be on a Friday. With more time and a week day included, the Friends hope that more in the community will be able to attend and enjoy the deals. All proceeds from the sale directly benefit the library, so you can feel great about adding to your bookshelf. If you’re looking for another way to contribute, the Friends always accept volunteers to help with the booksale. Of course, there is no need to wait for the fall booksale; the Friends of the Library Booksale room is open every Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. and always has great selections.
