Verlena F. Oliver, 89, died Friday, September 19, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Grimes United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Verlena was born September 9, 1925 in Des Moines to Fay and Ruth (Randolph) Huss. She was a graduate of North High School in 1943 and worked for Gordon’s Wholesale until 1970. It was there she met Bob Oliver and on February 14, 1970 they were married and continued their lives in Arkansas. They both worked for Tobacco Sales until their retirement in 1989 and settled in Hot Springs Village, AR. In 2005 they moved back to the Des Moines area and settled in Grimes where they both became very active and knew no strangers. Verlena’s passion in her life was her volunteering and membership in various organizations: P.E.O. (JZ and CY Chapters), Kiwanis Club, Food Bank of Iowa, Life Serve Blood Drive, GVSS, Kiwanis Miracle League, Key Club at the Dallas Center Grimes High School, and above all her church, Grimes United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband of 44 years, Bob; step children: Gloria Scholl, Bobbi (Sam) Dings both of Johnston, Joyce (Frank) Byrne of West Des Moines; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; brother, Earl “Lee” Huss of Hot Springs Village, AR; sister-in-law, Helen (Dave) Struthers of Arkansas; brother-in-law, Mando Oliver of Des Moines; nephews: Dale (Nancy) Huss of California, Kendall (Nancy) of Missouri; nieces: Becky (Jim) Rice of Winfield, Klaudia Spivey of Colorado, Konya (Dave) Doucette of Virginia, Kristen (Jim) Vance of Indiana; and a very special friend, Carol Sue Williams of Arkansas. Verlena was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Floyd and sister-in-law, Sallie Huss.
