Library News, Sept 22

Posted September 22, 2014 in Community Web Exclusives, Winterset

The Library will be closed on Thursday, September 25, for continuing education
The Library will be closed on Thursday, September 25, because the librarians are headed for CE classes at DMACC South Ridge, during the State Library’s annual Library Town Meetings.

Cooking with Annie, September 27, 10:00 am – “Outside the Box”
Annie is cooking up some great ideas for the September session.  Come hungry.  Annie will demonstrate a few dishes that you haven’t considered before, including bacon mac & cheese from scratch, homemade tomato parmesan soup, and dark chocolate peanut butter cups!  Due to repairs at the Library, the program will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1120 N. 8th Ave, Winterset.  Registration recommended by calling the Library at 462-1731.

Book Discussion Group, October 9, 7:00 pm, at the Library
September’s book discussion was re-set for October 9 at 7:00 pm.  “Great House,” by Nicole Krauss, is a power-packed series of stories about a huge desk and the fates of the families that owned it. JoEllen Giles will lead the discussion. As always, it is free and open to the public.

Covered Bridge Festival is fast approaching – “The Library Rocks!!”
On Saturday, October 11, the Library will participate in the city-wide collaboration of family-oriented activities, called the Timeless Treasure Hunt.  And guess what our theme is for October: “The Library Rocks!!”  The Library will have a tent in Monumental Park, just south of the Library, and we will be identifying rocks, making crafts with rocks, and doing a treasure hunt for timeless treasures that are important to the history of Winterset and Madison County.

Writer’s Workshop to meet on October 2, 6:30
The Library is lucky to have a Writer’s Workshop that is spearheaded by Heather Clark.  Heather is a graduate from Drake University, with degrees in arts and literature.  During the Library construction project, the Writer’s Workshop is being held on the first Thursdays each month, from 6:30-8:00 pm in the children’s story room.  Bring some of your writings to share, and be ready to offer your constructive comments to other writers.

Children’s Story-Times
Toddlers, we know you are busy, but don’t forget to bring your parents to Toddler Tuesdays for ages 0-2 on Tuesdays at 10:30 am.  For preschoolers ages 3 and up, Library Story-Times are on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30.  The Library loves to see these little ones who are learning so rapidly in every setting.  Reading is recognized as contributing to the health and well-being of every child, and pediatricians are recommending reading for their little patients.  At the Library, besides meeting new friends, they are also learning to love good stories, and how to pay attention in a group setting — good preparation for Kindergarten!  Parents, due to our upcoming construction project, please call the Library on the morning of our story-times to make sure that we will be holding the program.

Community Coffee meets Fridays at Zion Church
Community coffee is held every Friday morning 9-10:00 am.  We had to move the coffee group for the summer construction, and Zion Church basement is the place to be.  We thank the Museum for allowing the coffee group to use the facility.

Library Repairs – Thank you for your understanding during our messy building repairs
Interior work has begun in the meeting room (zone A).  We intend for the Library to be open as much as possible, during our usual hours.  Watch for signage on the sidewalks to guide you into the Library.  We may soon have an alternate entrance through the Meeting Room door which is just to the south of the main Library entry-way.  For the most current information, please watch the Madisonian, the Library web-site http://www.winterset.lib.ia.us, and “friend” the Winterset Public Library on Facebook.  And please do use the phone to find out if we are open.  Currently, we are able to use the front door into the Library.  The back parking lot is blocked & that book return is closed and locked.  Remember, there’s a book return in the lobby accessible from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Friday & Saturday.
