Juanita Brown

Juanita “Nita Brown” was born October 29, 1927 in Nowata County, Okla. to the union of Hayes and Eva (Rowe) Sayles. She was the last of 14 children.

Juanita attended Sanders School on Big Creek in Nowata County, Okla. She professed her hope in Christ at an early age. She was married to Louis Brown and they had one son, who died in infancy. Juanita and Louis separated in the early years of their marriage and after his death she never remarried.

Juanita was a skilled chef! Families shared and laughed at the tables of her restaurant, “Nita’s Café”. Her plate size pancakes were at the top of her menu of delectable delights. She also loved music, particularly gospel music.

In 2005, Juanita moved to Des Moines to be closer to her brother, Glenn, and his wife, Darlene, whom she called “Sis”.

Juanita departed her earthly life Friday, September 19, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Jack Mayes, Deacon Carl Mayes, William Mayes, Plasant (Pleas) Sayles, Orval Sayles, Deacon Neal Sayles, Elder Preston Sayles, Paul Sayles, Lester Sayles Sr., Glenn Sayles, Flora Mayes-Downing, Cora Lee Sayles McAdams and Viola Marie Sayles-Overton.

Left to cherish Juanita’s memory is her sister-in-law, Darlene “Sis” Sayles of Des Moines, IA and a great host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
