We have a lot of community partners who work with us and help us out in various ways. Businesses in town make it possible to give those children, teens and adults who complete the various stages of the summer reading program tasty treats and fun prizes to enjoy. Some come to the library and help us by putting on educational programs or other presentations. Others, like the Friends of the West Des Moines Public Library, give us ongoing support. More on that in a moment.
But first, know that on Thursday, Sept. 18, the Whole Foods Market at 4100 University in West Des Moines is making it possible for that day’s shoppers to donate 5 percent of the money they spend to the West Des Moines Library. So if you’re in the market for organic, fair trade Havarti anyway, consider picking it up somewhere that gives a little back to the community.
Also, the Friends of the West Des Moines Public Library will be at Illumifest on Saturday, Sept. 27, selling lighted novelties for children. As the sun goes down and the darkness gathers, the lighted toy you purchase for your child (or yourself) will support the non-profit organization that does so much to support the library with grant-writing, programming and gifts. And don’t miss the free face painting at the library. Enter through the pond-side door into the “Library Living Room,” to have your child transformed into Spider Man, a princess, a cat, etc.
Reminder: By the time this goes to press, the library will have resumed Sunday hours. The library is open 2-5 p.m. on Sundays between Labor Day and Memorial Day.
Be sure to check the program calendar on our website (www.wdmlibrary.org) for more information, but here are some events and programs going on in September, some of which require registration and some of which do not:
