Advice for your device

Get the lowdown on your library’s downloadables. Bring your mobile device (smartphone, tablet or e-reader) to one of our classes and get some advice and help installing the library’s apps for e-books, downloadable audiobooks and e-magazines. The next class is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

Classes and apps are all free. Your gadget must have basic setup done (out of the box, set up, passwords entered, charged and know the basics) as a prerequisite to this class. You will need your library card and PIN, and you may need the password for the App Store on your device. Pre-register.

Furry Tales
Saturday, Sept. 13, 11 a.m.
Stop by the library to sign up for a 10-minute slot to read a favorite story to therapy dog Scout. Sharing stories with Scout is a fantastic way to practice reading skills and make a furry friend at the same time.

Artsy Kids – Tie-Dyeing Fun
Wednesday, Sept. 17, 4 p.m.
Kids in grades three-eight can start off the school year by experimenting with tie-dyeing. We will provide the supplies; you just need to show up ready to get messy. Please preregister for this program.

Teen Book Discussion
Monday, Sept. 29, 4 p.m.
Enjoy some pizza as we talk about the book “Leviathan” by Scott Westerfeld. Teens in grades six through 12 can find copies of the book and sign up for this program at the information desk.

Franklin Afternoon Book Discussion
Monday, Oct. 6, 1 p.m.
We will discuss “The Astronaut Wives Club” by Lily Koppel. Copies of the book are available at the information desk.

Volunteens
Monday, Oct. 6, 4 p.m.
Teens in sixth through 12th grade can volunteer their time to help out with various library projects. Please stop by the library for an application form and have it signed by a parent or guardian prior to your first meeting.

Belin Quartet Live Performance
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m.
Franklin Avenue Library welcomes the Belin Quartet. The quartet is well known in the greater Des Moines community for its free noon-time concerts during the summer. Members of the quartet include violinists Julie Fox Henson, John Helmich and Tracy Engman Finkelshteyn, violist Sherida Josephson and cellist George Work.
