March 12, 1944 – August 31, 2014
Roger E. Johnson went to be with his Lord on August 31, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old and was a resident of Urbandale, IA.
Roger was born at the Story City hospital in 1944, grew up in Ellsworth, IA and graduated from Ellsworth High School. He graduated from the American Institute of Business and served in the Army Reserves from 1965 to 1972. Afterwards, he spent most of his professional career in consumer banking and owned and operated Johnson Wholesale Windows. A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, Roger spent most of his life disappointed but always hopeful for the next season. His love for the Iowa Hawkeyes usually made up for the many Cubs failures.
Roger enjoyed hunting and fishing with his cousins, sons, grandchildren, and friends and spent many Friday afternoons playing cards at The Cottontail Lounge. He also looked forward to cooking and entertaining for friends and family during annual 4th of July parties and Sunday family dinners.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents and his dog, Flash. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda; his sons, Jeffery (Lynn), Jay (Jessi), and Joel (Kristy); and his nine grandchildren, Owen, Eric, Cooper, Ryan, Gracy, Brody, Violet, Lexi, and Cole.
We thank everyone for their love and support throughout his illness. We also want to send a special thank you to the staff of the Kavanagh House for their compassionate care. Finally, we want to recognize the amazing care and support provided by Dr. Steve Heddinger, Amy, Kim, and the rest of the staff at the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
Visitation is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 3 at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, September 4 at Westover Chapel in Des Moines and for 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ellsworth with a graveside service at Homewood Cemetery and fellowship to follow.
Memorials may be made in Roger’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project or The Kavanagh House, Des Moines.
