Waukee, Iowa –The Waukee Area Arts Council’s Opera in the Schools Project is in full swing thanks to a grant from Prairie Meadows. Professional Opera singer, Craig Irvin is visiting 5 area schools (Waukee, Adel DeSoto Minburn, Dallas Center Grimes, Valley and Urbandale) in August and September. Irvin will not only perform but teach master classes, coach and share his knowledge as a working professional.
“Opera is not something that schools spend much time on and the Waukee Area Arts Council feels that it is a bonus that we can help expand the knowledge about Opera,” said Cindy DePond, Director of the Waukee Area Arts Council. “Craig is a working professional, a Waukee native and is still based in Waukee but travels to the far ends of the country,” continued DePond. “He is such an inspiration to the students and can share his craft and career with a new generation. Thanks to Prairie Meadows we are able to offer participation in this project to multiple schools.”
An Opera in the Schools Celebration performance will take place on Saturday, September 27 at 7:00 pm at the Waukee High School Auditorium. Students from all of the schools will be invited to perform. They will join Craig on stage, perform a sample of All State Music and a few will sing solos. This will kick off the Waukee Area Arts Council’s fall season. Tickets are $12 adults and $5 students.
“There aren’t many chances for students to be able to sing on stage with a professional Opera singer! This is going to be a wonderful way to showcase the talent that we have in our area schools,” said DePond.
Irvin is a professional opera singer who makes his home in Waukee. He is a 1998 graduate of Waukee High School.
