Mabel E. Tuinstra, 92, of Des Moines ended life’s journey on Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Taylor House. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 30, at Iles Grandview Park Chapel. Graveside Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, August 31, at Rising Sun Cemetery east of Pleasant Hill.
Mabel was born December 21, 1921, at home in the Valley Garden community of Des Moines to J. Lester and Goldia (Sparks) Eaton. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and AIB. During World War II she worked in the Pentagon. She returned to Des Moines where she married Kenneth A. Tuinstra on December 31, 1947. They made their home for a few years in Davenport before spending the rest of their lives in Des Moines. She was an active volunteer for Four Mile Neighborhood improvement. After raising her three children she returned to work for the Grandview University Office of the Registrar. She retired to care for her mother and husband. She enjoyed walking with her friends, Gladys Choate and Louise Gathercole.
Mabel devoted her life to the care of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1993 and two sisters, Helen Mae Hollison and Mildred Peterson. She is survived by her two sons, John and Dan (Cindy) Tuinstra; daughter, Rebecca (Jim) Nickel; four grandchildren, Hannah and Naomi Tuinstra, Martin and Sarah Hofkamp; sister-in-law, Alverta Chamberlain and numerous nieces and nephews.
