Posted September 03, 2014 in Community Web Exclusives, Winterset

Local Newspapers are now digitized, 1871-1977
The Library is thrilled to announce the availability of a new online historical research tool free for anyone who has access to the Internet.  The digitization project was funded with grants from the Madison County Historical Society, Madison County Genealogical Society, and a family foundation.  Point your internet to and you will discover the digitized version of The Winterset Madisonian and all its title variations from 1871-1977, and also the various years of The Winterset News, The Winterset Reporter, The Winterset Review, The Madison County Reporter, and all their title variations.

Used Book Sale, Sept 5-6, to be held at American Legion Hall
Friends of the Winterset Public Library will hold a Used Book Sale at the American Legion Hall.  It will be open to the public on Sept 5-6, and a Friends preview will be held on Thursday evening (memberships available at the door for $5).  American Legion will sell food, so you’ll be able to satisfy your tummy while you slake your thirst for a good book!  The Library requests that you bring your plastic grocery bags to the Library for use at the Book Sale.  And get your used books ready to bring to the Legion Hall Sept 2nd – 4th from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.  All proceeds of the Book Sale are used to purchase new Library materials – a gift that keeps on giving.

“Teens with Tonja” starts again September 6, 2-4:00 pm
Teens, dive into Fall with Tonja at the Library.  Help Tonja plan the activities and the snacks for the year.  Tonja is cooking up some surprise activities for you on Sept. 6.  We learned a lot this summer with our Makey Makey® (including our banana piano) and we have projects to keep our hands busy.  Put it on your calendar – Teens will meet on the first Saturday each month, 2-4:00.

Friends of the Library regular meeting September 11, 6:30 pm
Come find out all the buzz about Friends of the Library.  All are welcome at our regular meeting on September 11, at 6:30 pm in the Library.  We will be reviewing the Used Book Sale, and making plans for the annual Library Lights Christmas Tree Auction — our participation in the city-wide Holiday Hop.  We will also be planning our Sparkle & Snap party for members of Friends.  The Friends organization is a non-profit charitable group wholly dedicated to enhancement of the Winterset Public Library for the benefit of the whole community.  Memberships are Annual for $5, Supporting for $25, and Life-time for $100.  Four annual payments of Supporting membership result in a life-time membership.

Book Discussion Group, September 25, 7:00 pm
In September, the book for discussion will be “Great House,” by Nicole Krauss, a power-packed series of stories about a huge desk and the fates of the families that owned it.  Join us on September 25 at 7:00 pm for the discussion, which will be led by JoEllen Giles.

Cooking with Annie, September 27, 10:00 am – “Outside the Box”
Annie is cooking up some great ideas for the September session.  Come hungry.  Annie will demonstrate a few dishes that you haven’t considered before!  Registration recommended by calling 462-1731.

Children’s Story-Times
Toddlers, we know you are busy, but don’t forget to bring your parents to Toddler Tuesdays for ages 0-2 on Tuesdays at 10:30 am.  For preschoolers ages 3 and up, Library Story-Times are on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30.  The Library loves to see these little ones who are learning so rapidly in every setting.  Reading is recognized as contributing to the health and well-being of every child, and pediatricians are recommending reading for their little patients.  At the Library, besides meeting new friends, they are also learning to love good stories, and how to pay attention in a group setting — good preparation for Kindergarten!  Parents, due to our upcoming construction project, please call the Library on the morning of our story-times to make sure that we will be holding the program.

Community Coffee meets Fridays at Zion Church
Community coffee is held every Friday morning 9-10:00 am.  We had to move the coffee group for the summer construction, and Zion Church basement is the place to be.  We thank the Museum for allowing the coffee group to use the facility.

Library Repairs – Thank you for your understanding during our messy building repairs
Interior work has begun in the meeting room (zone A).  We intend for the Library to be open as much as possible, during our usual hours.  Watch for signage on the sidewalks to guide you into the Library.  We may soon have an alternate entrance through the Meeting Room door which is just to the south of the main Library entry-way.  For the most current information, please watch the Madisonian, the Library web-site, and “friend” the Winterset Public Library on Facebook.  And please do use the phone to find out if we are open.  Currently, we are able to use the front door into the Library.  The back parking lot is blocked & that book return is closed and locked.  Remember, there’s a book return in the lobby accessible from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Friday & Saturday.
