James ‘Jim’ Lukawski, age 73, of 1166-130th Street, died August 27, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Following the service, he will be cremated.
James Joseph Lukawski was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 14, 1941, the son of Joseph and Helen (Jarosz) Lukawski.
He graduated from De La Salle High School in Chicago in 1959.
Following graduation, Jim served with the United States Army as a military policeman during the Vietnam era.
On August 7, 1965, Jim married Bertha Boon in Des Moines and the couple celebrated their 49th anniversary this month.
He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston and in earlier years worked as a detective for the I.S.U. Security Department in Ames.
From 1976 to 2001, Jim was employed by Boone County as a Deputy Sheriff. He retired as a Deputy Sheriff but continued working as a transport officer for the Boone County Sheriff’s Department until 2013.
Jim loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, yard work, and pistol range shooting. He especially enjoyed spending time and teasing his grandchildren.
He was a former member of the Moose Lodge.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Bertha of Boone; a son Joseph Lukawski and wife Dana of Sarasota, Florida; a daughter Michelle Reek and husband Scott of Olathe, Kansas; three brothers, Raymond and wife Maria of Boone; Kenneth and wife Ruth of Byron, Illinois, and Joseph T. Lukawski and wife Sandy of Arlington Heights, Illinois; and five grandchildren, Morgan and Katherine Lukawski, and Brian, Abby, and Ethan Hunt.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday at the Church of the Sacred Heart from 10 a.m. until service time.
