Urbandale, IA – The Spina Bifida Association of Iowa will host an open house for friends of the Association and the community on August 26, 2014 from 5 – 7 pm at their Urbandale office, located at 8525 Douglas Avenue Suite 39, Urbandale.
The purpose of the event is to share plans for the upcoming year, celebrate the successes of the previous year, and to welcome its first executive director, Leslie Garman, also of Urbandale. The group will also kick off its annual fundraising effort, the 3rd annual WALK-N-ROL as well as to share plans for Education Day 2015, an annual educational program day to support those affected by Spina Bifida. The event is planned for early spring 2015.
Sherri Tekippe, President of the Iowa Chapter is also chair of the its annual Walk-N-Roll event. “Last year was our biggest year yet, and we were able to raise over $33,000 in our event. This the funds raised, we’re excited to be able to expand services in the coming year. We’re proud of our efforts and hope to involve others in providing support to families and individuals affected by spina bifida.”
Spina Bifida is the most common, permanently disabling birth defect and affects an estimated 166,000 people in the United States. It occurs when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all of the way; depending on the location of the hole in the spinal column, a person may have minor or significant disability. People with Spina Bifida can have physical, mental, and social problems, including physical difficulty with walking and getting around or going to the bathroom, latex allergy, obesity, skin breakdown, gastrointestinal disorders, learning disabilities, depression, tendonitis and sexual issues.
