John “Jack” Francis Geneser, 87, a resident of Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, formerly of Woodward, passed from this life on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the Masonic Home. In agreement with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A funeral liturgy celebrating Jack’s life will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 31, at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, where the family will greet friends for two hours prior to the service – from 4 to 6 p.m. A private committal service, with military honors conducted by Granger American Legion Post 717, will take place at Beaver Catholic Cemetery, rural Granger.
Jack was born on October 31, 1926 in Granger, Iowa, to Leo Francis and Helen Marie (Dehack) Geneser. He was a graduate of Granger High School. Jack served with the U.S. Army during World War II. In his early years, Jack had a creamery route in the Granger area. Later, he owned and operated Geneser Implement; and was the Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment dealer in Granger for many years. During that time, Jack served on the National Dealers’ Panel for Allis Chalmers. After the implement business closed in the late 1980’s, Jack was employed by Barr-Nunn Transportation and eventually retired from there in early 2000.
Jack served on the Woodward-Granger School Board for 12 years, six of those years as President. For 27 years, Jack was a basketball official with both the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. In 1991, Jack was honored with induction into the Iowa High School Officials’ Hall of Fame. Jack was a horseracing enthusiast and at one time, owned several thoroughbred race horses. He also attended the Kentucky Derby for many years. In his spare time, Jack enjoyed golfing with family and friends and also elk hunting in Montana.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Barbie (Joe) Costello of Dallas Center, Daniel (Margaretta “Gretta”) Geneser of West Des Moines and Joanne Geneser of Woodward; sister, Francie Wade of Woodward; two brothers, William “Bill” Geneser of Woodward and Joseph “Joe” Geneser of Naples, FL; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded into eternal life by his parents; wife, Ardell Geneser; son, Gregory Geneser; one grandson, Bobby John Costello; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Ray Geneser.
The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to The Hannah Geneser Foundation.
