First United Methodist Church sent 39 young congregation members to camp last year.

Camp Sunday, an auction fundraiser event, will be held at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson on March 23 after worship at 11:30 a.m. The event serves as a fundraiser to send the church’s youth groups to United Methodist church camps. Lunch will also be served to the event’s attendees at 11:30 in exchange for a freewill donation.

Camp Sunday will feature both live and silent auctions. Items auctioned off will include homemade baked goods, various gift baskets, gift certificates, handcrafted décor items, sporting goods, jewelry, a processed beef package with locally raised beef and more. All money raised via the auctions will go toward church camp and youth program registrations for the year.

“I attended camp as a youngster, beginning at the age of 11 and continued through high school, returning as a camp counselor throughout college,” says Karen Shannon, the Christian education director at First United Methodist Church. “As a young person at a very impressionable age of my life, I became a Christian on the holy ground of church camp. It is so important to give kids the opportunity to be around other Christians, away from the confines of their hometown and begin or continue on their walk of faith.”

Last year the church sent 39 youth congregation members to United Methodist church camps and 15 youth to various different youth programs. The Camp Sunday event raised more than $5,500 last year. A week of camp costs approximately $400 per camper, though Karen Shannon says the experience is worth it for young people looking to expand their knowledge and faith.

“Camp is a wonderful place to experience God’s love and grace at a young age and truly be impacted for the rest of your life,” she says. “Camp is a passion of mine, and it gives me the platform to encourage and enable children and youth to attend camp and other youth programs.”

All are welcome to attend the meal and auction as well as to donate items to be auction.
