Lutherans travel from across the state to Lutheran Day on the Hill in Des Moines.

It’s an exciting time of year for people of the Lutheran faith, as the annual Lutheran Day on the Hill is slated for Monday, March 10. Lutherans from all over the state will descend upon the State Capitol Building in Des Moines on behalf of poor and disadvantage Iowans. Held every March, Lutheran Day on the Hill is organized in partnership with the three Iowa synods of the ELCA and Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI).

“When as a synod we participate in Lutheran Day on the Hill, it is an outward expression of our faith and commitment to be God’s hands in the world,” explains Bishop Michael Burk. “I’m convinced that strengthening our connection, coordinating our efforts to be advocates will enhance the mission of this church.”

Attendees will spend the day in prayer as well as discuss issues that might warrant further discourse with local representatives in the legislature, focusing on critical issues facing children, families and adults in Adel. As people of faith, Lutherans are believe it’s their moral and Christian duty to advocate for such people, but sometimes even advocates and activists need direction, guidance and coaching. Lutheran Day on the Hill offers that. It is a way for people to receive training, information and unity with others to speak for those who cannot be heard.

Lutheran Day on the Hill begins at 9:30 a.m. at Elim Christian Fellowship in Des Moines, located at 525 E. Ninth St. After a morning filled with education on the issues, stories from LSI clients and speakers, participants head to the Iowa State Capitol Building to meet with their legislators. The day typically ends between 2 and 3 p.m. Lunch is provided. It’s free to attend.
