John Holeman

John C. Holeman, loving family man, inspiring teacher and supporter of music, passed away on March 2nd, 2014.

John was born on December 21, 1929, in Grundy Center, Iowa, and along with helping out on the family farm, he participated in the band and chorus. He obtained his Bachelor’s of Music Education from Iowa State Teacher’s College (now UNI), and then served in the Korean War as an electronic/radar technician.

Upon his return, he obtained his Masters of Music Education from the University of Iowa. John’s professional career was serving as a band director – in Allison, West Branch and Odebolt, and from 1965 to 1988, as the High School band director for the Centerville Big Reds. John was a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, serving as president in 1980, and was the recipient of the IBA Karl King Distinguished Service Award in 1992.

Upon his retirement in 1988, John continued to be active in the Centerville community by serving on the boards of the Historic Preservation Corporation/Trolley, the Appanoose County Historical Museum, and Appanoose County Conservation, and he was a member of the Iowa Military Veteran’s Band. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to any of these organizations or to the Centerville School Foundation. He also served on the board of the Centerville Concert Association and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he lent his voice to the choir for many years. John enjoyed serving his community, traveling, woodworking, refighting the Civil War, drinking coffee with his buddies at Hardees, singing with his barbershop group and spending time with his family. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia, his two daughters, Ann (Donald) Merrifield and Kay (Doug) Crouse, and his 5 grandchildren. Following the service there will be a reception in Fellowship Hall where the family will greet friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Centerville with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. A reception in John’s honor will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be held at a later date in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to either the Appanoose County Historic Preservation Corporation, the Appanoose County Historical Society, the Appanoose County Conservation Board or the Iowa Veterans Military Band and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
