The Polk County Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce the opening of the newly constructed Westside Community Center, located at 134 6th Street in the Valley Junction neighborhood of West Des Moines. Today, March 3, will mark the first day of operations. A public open house will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 1:00 and 5:00 with tours and refreshments following the brief program.
Angela Connolly of the Polk County Board of Supervisors represents West Des Moines and stated “The current community center space only holds about 80 people and seniors are only able to access the space between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. so Polk County believed that it was important to be able to provide a more comfortable space that can accommodate additional services and activities.”
The new 10,100 square foot Community Center will be able to accommodate up to 216 people and will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and is available for rent on nights and weekends. The new building includes a multi-function dining room, fully operational kitchen, card/computer room and lounge, billiards, craft room, fitness room, medical room, office space, handicapped restrooms, on-site parking and an outdoor patio. One of the primary services of this and other Polk County Community Centers is to provide congregate meals to seniors age 60 and older in Polk County.
“This new Community Center will go beyond providing congregate meals to seniors. It will be a safe and comfortable place where seniors will be able to stay connected to their community, socialize with friends, learn, and be physically active, all very important aspects of healthy aging” said Angela Connolly.
The new Community Center is one of 17 congregate meal sites in Polk County that served nearly 200,000 people last year. The previous West Des Moines congregate meal site alone served 13,500 seniors last year.
