John T. Hart,86, of West Des Moines passed away February 26, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, surrounded by his family.
John was born April 20, 1927 in Ames, Iowa to Elmer G. Hart and Dorothy B. Hart.
He graduated from Wentworth Military Academy, enlisted in the US Army, and served his country in World War II.
In August of 1948 he married Dorothy Marie Schanche in Ames, Iowa.
They moved to Des Moines where they operated the Dairy Queen on S.W. 9th Street for over 10 years. John then sold insurance for Central Life, where he was a top salesman for many years. He then started his own remodeling company, Quality Craftsmanship, allowing him to do what he loved until retirement.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Des Moines, Iowa.
From childhood, John was an independent and free thinker. As a child he dreamed of setting free the animals in Brookside Park Zoo in Ames. And he did it! The animals did not run away because their feed was in their cages. But they were free, for awhile.
John was an avid geologist and rock collector. He enjoyed hiking, snow skiing, building and flying radio controlled planes, traveling, gardening and keeping an impeccable lawn.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie, his children, Timothy of Texas, and Pamela (Wade)Berhow of Des Moines, 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Jeremy, Emma Gean, Elizabeth and Katherine; 4 great- grandchildren, and his dog Spike.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved dog, Flora.
