Moving forward

Posted February 26, 2014 in Community Featured, Waukee

Fellow Waukee Chamber Members:

I have been looking forward to the new year, as I will follow in the footsteps of our previous year’s Chamber presidents and lead the organization into 2014.  The organization has been led by outstanding people with my challenge to continue forward. I am excited about the board leadership with last year’s board members who are staying and the new members who have agreed to serve in this capacity.

As with any business, we tend to look to the new year with optimism and excitement because of the opportunities before us. I am pleased to report I have that outlook not only for our business here at Design Alliance, but with the Chamber as well.  Waukee is a fun place to be right now with the business environment allowing tremendous growth and prosperity.

The Waukee Chamber 2014 Annual Dinner and Silent Auction, A Celebration of 15 Years, was held on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the West Des Moines Marriott. Our 170 member guests in attendance enjoyed networking, presentations from Chamber leadership, award recognition and a fantastic presentation by Jack Lashier, director of the Iowa Hall of Pride. A big thank you to our board of directors, dinner committee and ambassadors, intern Kayla Sabotin and Melinda Behn, our executive director, for all the time and focus they put into making our annual dinner such a special evening for all in attendance. Thank you to all members for your participation and to all sponsors and volunteers for helping to make this evening a success.

Congratulations to 2013 Member of the Year Sumner Worth of Gilcrest/Jewett Lumber Company. The 2013 Ambassador of the Year was awarded to Dr. Abel Shaw of Shaw Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center. A gavel plaque was presented to 2013 Board President Vickie Dornfeld and outgoing board members were recognized including Sara Larson of American Trust & Savings Bank, Angie Wagner of McGowen, Hurst, Clark & Smith and Doug DeYarman of Shottenkirk Chevrolet. Thank you outgoing board members for your expertise and continuing our mission to promote growth and prosperity in our local economy.

The opportunities are endless for the Waukee Chamber this year. We have the excitement of a new year along with the expertise and determination of board members and an executive director who have set a clear vision for 2014. Welcome this year to new Waukee Chamber Board Members: Eric Kress of the Waukee Family YMCA, Laura Warner of the West Des Moines Marriott, Wendy K. Marsh, individual member, Brandon Lampkin of Waukee Hy-Vee and Charlie Bottenberg of Bottenberg, Masterson and Eichorn LLP. I look forward to working with new and existing board members to make 2014 the best year yet.

Our first of three Waukee Legislative Coffees was held at the Waukee City Council Chambers on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Waukee Chamber joined the Greater Des Moines Partnership for the Feb. 13 Chamber Day on the Hill. Our monthly networking luncheons kicked off for the year on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Waukee Community Center, sponsored by the Waukee Family YMCA.

Upcoming events include the March 1 Waukee Legislative Coffee, March 4 New Member Welcome Breakfast, March 11 State of the City, March 20 Chamber Networking Luncheon and April 10 What’s Cookin’ in Waukee: A Business Expo and Tasting Experience.

Let’s have a good time, and see you at the Chamber events.
