Vivian L. Feilmann, 89, joined her heavenly father on Monday, February 17, 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 – 52nd Street in Des Moines. Burial with military honors will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Vivian Lucille Newton Feilmann was born the oldest of six children on June 27, 1924 in Des Moines, Iowa to Jessie and Bert (Tait) Newton. After graduating from Lincoln High School, she joined the Army, serving as a WAC during WWII.

After the war, she attended Ottawa (KS) University, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), graduating with a degree in physical education from Drake University in 1949. She married Carl B. Feilmann on August 9, 1952 at the First Church of the Open Bible in Des Moines. Vivian taught physical education and swimming in Clarion (1949-1952), Boone (1952-1953), and Des Moines Harding Middle School (1953-1955). She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for 58 years.

A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Vivian, will be missed by her husband of 61 years, Carl Feilmann; twin sons, Paul Bernhard (Patricia Wojtkiewicz) Feilmann of Omaha and Mark Graham (Ann) Feilmann of Ankeny; and daughter Ann Augusta (Robert) Merkley of Des Moines. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Benjamin Graham Merkley, Holly Ann Merkley, Bonnie Elyse Merkley, Grant Lane Feilmann, Cale Joseph Feilmann, Adrea Graham Feilmann, Monica Patrice (Corey Curtis Wichman) Graham, Christopher Allan Graham, Ian Bernhard (Shawn Marie) Feilmann; five great grandchildren, Cole Andrew Swanson, Jayden Michael Graham, Trey Eli Graham, Avery Jade Wichman, Marshal Bernhard Feilman; brother, John (Suzanne) Newton of Etohwa, NC; sister Judith (John) Rybiski of Wimberley, TX; and brother-in-law, Vernon Dethmers. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Joyce Dethmers and Gertrude Hartzer; brother, Theodore Newton; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Hartzer.

The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Iles-Westover Chapel.
