February 17, 1921 – February 14, 2014
Joseph Francis Unverferth, 92, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Valentine’s Day, 2014. He will be deeply missed by all who experienced his love and faith.
Devoted family man, World War II Navy dive-bomber, computer aficionado, devout Christian; Joe’s life was full of enriching, exciting moments, and an abundance of virtue.
Joe was born the eldest of 12 children, February 17, 1921 in Perryville, MO to Edwin and Mary Unverferth. Military service earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross for 20 carrier missions during World War II as a Navy pilot. His flying career continued as a crop duster until he met his spouse of 50 years, Kate Gresham in Arkansas. Adopting her son, Lloyd, they raised a family of four children while managing retail businesses in Russellville, AR. At 55 years of age, Joe changed careers to become a residential developer, building homes until retirement. Joe and Kate RV’d throughout the country for 10 years until settling in Perryville, MO. Joe later moved to Iowa to be nearer his daughters and grandkids.
Joe’s memory is cherished for his peace, love, and faith – Christ’s love within him reflected for everyone he encountered.
Joe is survived by his four children, Lloyd Unverferth, Jo Kay Boyle, Jim (Nancy) Unverferth, and Helen (Craig) Schilling and six grandchildren.
