Iowa Rock’n’Roll Music Association and Iowa Blues Hall of Famer Bob Dorr and The Blue Band headline Colon Cancer Fundraiser

Posted February 06, 2014 in Downtown, Community Web Exclusives

Des Moines, Iowa – January 17, 2014 – The Bottoms Up Blues Bash on March 8th, 2014, features Bob Dorr and The Blue Band, with special guests The Jean Marie Salem Project, and Dustin Busch and Marc Janssen. The 6pm event at Wooly’s in the East Village is a collaboration of The Central Iowa Blues Society and DavidsFight.org.

This family friendly event is a celebration of colon cancer awareness month and fund raiser to help fight the disease in communities across the state.  There will be a special presentation for the kids by Blues in the Schools (BITS), presented by Frank “Freight Train” Strong.

“Blue is the color representing colon cancer awareness,” says David McCluskey, colon cancer survivor and founder of Davids Fight, a local nonprofit fighting colon cancer. “We’re celebrating with soulful blues music, music that comes from the heart, to raise awareness and funds to fight colon cancer in Iowa communities.”

1,700 Iowans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year. While it’s the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer in Iowa, it is the second leading cancer killer in the state, and the most preventable.  Colon cancer is 90 percent preventable with proper screening.

During David McCluskey’s cancer battle in 2007 he was inspired by the strength and positive spirit of colon cancer patient David Kinman, who survived two years beyond his diagnosis, but died at age 37. Thus, Davids Fight reflects the disease’s impact on both men. McCluskey is the organizer of central Iowa’s annual Get You Rear in Gear run/walk, set for August 23rd this year.
