Harry “Dean” Hannam, 77 of Urbandale passed away, Wednesday February 5, 2014 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 am, Monday February 10, 2014 at St. Pius X Catholic. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dean’s beloved home of Melrose, Iowa.

Dean was born April 8, 1936 in Melrose, Iowa, to Harry Martin Hannam and Edna Frances Kellog Hannam. In 1954 he moved to Des Moines and Urbandale areas where he lived the rest of his life. He married Marjorie A. Howe on November 23, 1957.

Dean graduated from Melrose High School in 1954 and attended Northwestern University mortgage banking school and the America Institute of Banking. Dean started his career at Valley National Bank in Des Moines. He served in several positions at Valley starting as messenger in 1954 and retiring in 1983 as President of the Mortgage Division. Dean continued working, owning several small businesses including R & C Office Supply, Monarch Cleaning Company, and Container Round Up which he co-owned with his son. Always hard-working and never really wanting to retire, Dean worked at Willis Auto Campus in Clive, Iowa until his death.

Dean was active member of St. Pius X church for 45 years. He was a past board member at Des Moines University for 39 years serving as Treasurer, Chairman of Finance Committee and Chairman of the Building Committee. Dean was a member of the Iowa Osteopathic Association, Des Moines Mortgage Bankers Association, President of the Iowa Mortgage Bankers Association, Des Moines Realtors Association, American Institute of Banking, Des Moines Housing council, Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, St Vincent De Paul Society and Knights of Columbus.

Dean is survived by his three children; daughter Kamela Camp of Plano, TX; daughter Michelle (Thomas) Nolen of Centralia, IL; son Mark (Debbie) Hannam of West Des Moines; sister Ella (Charles) Fisk of West Des Moines; sister Mary Jo Navin of Albia; sister Darlene (Phil) O’Brien of Decatur, IL; brother-in-law Jim (Bev) Howe of Ottumwa; sister-in-law Winnie Ragona of Centerville; sister-in-law Betty Jo Thompson of Des Moines; and sister-in-law Peggy Howe of Centerville. Grandchildren: John Scaglione, Des Moines; Jennifer (Brian) Scaglione Stillman, Austin, TX; Joseph & Jeana Wilson, Plano, TX; Joslyn & Jessica Hannam, Urbandale; Mark Jr. & Mikayla Hannam, West Des Moines; Julia Nolen, Centralia, IL; great-grandchildren; Asher, Jacqueline, and Alexander Scaglione, Ayden Gibson, Jordan Hannam, and Austin and Elena Stillman.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Walter Hannam, and his wife of 50 years, Marjorie A. Howe Hannam. Dean cared for Marge at home throughout her 10 year struggle with dementia. He rarely left her side, reminding us of the true meaning of love. He was a determined advocate for improving the quality of life for those who suffer from dementia and alzhemier’s.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6pm. Sunday at St. Pius X Catholic Church where a Vigil Service and rosary service will begin at 6 pm.
