Leo Wisecup, age 77, of 135 Underhill Street, died January 29, 2014, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Sarah Karber officiating. Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery south of Stratford.
Leo Junior Wisecup was born in Boone on April 28, 1936, the son of Leo and Velma (Nickell) Wisecup.
He graduated from Boone High School in 1954.
Leo married Sharon Anderson at Omaha, Nebraska, on March 19, 1956.
In earlier years, Leo worked as a route man for the former Boone Dairy and for Anderson Erickson Dairy.
He later worked as a plant operator at the Iowa State University power plant for 19 years, retiring in 1998.
For several years, he co-owned the Adobe Lounge in Boone.
During his life, Leo played midget baseball and was a pitcher on a semi pro baseball team.
He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, hunting and fishing, listening to old country music, and collecting caps.
Leo was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, NASCAR and Jeff Gordon, Peyton Manning, and the Cleveland Indians.
Leo’s biggest love was his horses. He raised and showed quarter and palomino horses. He often judged open horse shows throughout the Midwest.
Leo was a member of the Paint and Palomino Associations, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Boone Saddle Club of which he served as president and board member, and the Heart of Iowa Quarter Horse Association.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Roger Wisecup, infant brother Bobby Wisecup, and a brother-in-law Dean Anderson.
He is survived by his wife Sharon of Boone; three daughters, Debi King and husband Roger, and Jody Wisecup, all of Boone, and Linda Ewing and husband Jason of Otho; a brother Gary Wisecup and wife Karen of Boone; three sisters, Jeanne Patten and husband Dave of North Liberty, EmmaBelle Johnson and husband Lester of Jewell, and JoAnn Ray and husband Darwin of Boone; three grandchildren, Chris King and wife Ruthie, Matt King, and Mindy King, all of Boone; great-granddaughter Arielle King of Boone; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary Wisecup of Boone, Jackie Anderson of Nixa, Missouri, Wilma Westrum and husband Noel, and Pete and wife Marvie Anderson, all of Stratford; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Monday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 5 until 8 p.m.
On Tuesday, friends may call from 8 a.m. until service time.
