Mike Murrane

Michael W. Murrane, a man you would choose — if you could — to be father, son, brother, cousin or neighbor — died Sunday, January 25, 2014, from complications of Parkinson’s and ulcerative colitis. He was 80 years old.

Mike leaves his wife, Patty, son Thomas (Lynn), and daughter Mary Pat. Mike and Patty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013.

Other survivors include brother Matt (Carlene) of Bayard: three sisters, Madonna (Jerry) Wilson of Spring Hill, KS, Marie of Carroll, IA and Margaret (Eugene) of Prescott, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Joseph Murrane, and his sister and her husband, Martie and Bob Jenners.

The loves of Mike’s life were his grandchildren Megan, Michael, Macie and Melina who called him “Popo,” and his grinning great-granddaughter, Alice. He also leaves many cousins and in-laws.

Born August, 1933, in Carroll, IA, Mike grew up on a farm in Bayard, IA and earned his bachelor’s degree in science in Farm Operations, from Iowa State University in 1960. He was an Accredited Farm Manager for more than 35 years for Hertz Farm Management in Nevada, IA., King Management in Des Moines, and Boatsmen’s Bank (Central National Bank) in Des Moines. Mike handled all aspects of farm management for accounts ranging from 80 to 800 acres and traveled the state extensively. He was also involved in real estate sales, agricultural acquisitions and appraisals. Mike served as a staff sergeant in the Korean War. He was a faithful, generous, and longtime member of St. Theresa’s Church, serving on both the Parish Council and School Board.

Mike was a perfectionist in all he did whether keeping meticulous records, building things for his children, helping his son build things for Popo’s grandchildren, or the doggy stairs for Lexus and Sophie. He was a proud fan of ISU sports. Mike loved working in his yard and was thankful for the help he received from his good neighbors. He loved traveling with his family and spending time, over a good meal and cocktails, with all his in-laws and many friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Iles-Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials contributions may be made to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Online condolences will be welcomed at
