Marvelle Stichter, 100, passed away peacefully, January 26, 2014. A Mass of Catholic Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd. in Des Moines. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 29 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel. A rosary and vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Marvelle was born July 31, 1913 in Valley Junction, the daughter of Charles and Lela Vesta King. She graduated from Valley High School and completed Nurses’ Training at Mercy Hospital. She was united in marriage to Earl J. Stichter in 1940 and raised their daughter, Susan on the east side of Des Moines. Marvelle worked as a part time nursing supervisor at Valley View Village until her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Federation of China Painters and Mercy School of Nursing Alumni. She served as a former president of Iowa China Painters Chapter and received many awards for her china painting at the Iowa State Fair. She was recognized at the governor’s luncheon for being a centenarian. Marvelle volunteered at St. Peter’s Catholic Church as a wedding coordinator for many years. She enjoyed china painting, reading, sewing, crafts, playing cards and especially spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Gaffney and husband, Tom of Las Vegas, NV and a grandson, Sean Brown of Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl and a brother, Richard King II.

She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
