Vern ‘Ray’ Wilson, age 77, of 401 West Division Street in Ogden and formerly of Boone, died January 24, 2013, at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.
A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden with Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, west of Boone.
Ray was born in Boone on February 3, 1935, the son of Albert and Jeannette (Shaw) Nickell. His father died in 1938 and his mother married Dean Wilson who became his adopted father.
On May 2, 1957, Ray married Rose Marie Reese in Boone.
He proudly served the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Ray attended Water Treatment Tech School in Neosho, Missouri. He also graduated from DMACC in Boone and attended Iowa State University.
In earlier years, Ray worked for the City of Cedar Rapids at the Water Pollution Control Plant.
Then he and Rose owned/operated a Sinclair gas station and also operated a Clark Filling Station.
For 17 years, Ray was a Ward Supervisor at Woodward State Hospital School.
Ray enjoyed CB radios, hunting and fishing, collecting guns, solving crossword puzzles, cooking spaghetti, listening to Frank Sinatra music, and was a Chicago Cubs fan.
He was very good with his hands, loved to tinker with things, and could fix just about anything.
Ray especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Ray was a 17 year lung cancer survivor.
He is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather and a brother William Wilson.
Ray is survived by his wife Rose Marie of Ogden; a son Jeffrey Wilson of Ogden; three daughters: Rhonda Askin and husband Joe of Kansas City, Missouri, Lori Wilson-Voss and husband Bruce of Huxley, and Janae Lentz and husband Nick of Ogden; a brother Donny Wilson and wife Barb of Boone; two sisters Deanna Mattson and husband Merritt of Boone and Donna Sheibley and husband Mike of Dawson; six grandchildren: Jaryd Sunstrom and wife Jess of Ankeny, Sydney Askin and fiancé Christian Hackett and Taylor Askin, all of Kansas City, Missouri, Alexa Lentz of Des Moines, Austin Lentz, and Abbigail Lentz, both of Ogden; and two great-grandchildren Chase and Camryn Sunstrom.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Monday from 1 until 4 p.m. and then at the Church of the Sacred Heart from 5 until 8 p.m. where a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m.
Visitation continues Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ogden from 9:30 until service time.
