Q: How can I protect myself during this time of year?

Posted January 16, 2013 in Advice Column

A: With cold and flu season upon us, I would like to take a moment to discuss how to protect your health and well-being this time of year.

First and foremost, it is imperative to practice good hand hygiene. Proper hand washing is the No. 1 way to prevent the spread of infection. If you are unable to wash your hands, the next best thing is hand sanitizers.

If you have not received a flu shot, there is no time better than now. Flu shots are a leading line of defense in keeping healthy during the winter months. Even if you practice good hand washing and have received your flu shot, you may still find yourself not feeling 100 percent. If this is the case, get plenty of rest, stay hydrated and stay home if you are running a fever.

As Windsor Manor of Webster City Health Care Coordinator, I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy start to the new year.
