DES MOINES, Iowa – January 2, 2013 — The Polk County Board of Supervisors took action today to elect Tom Hockensmith, 4th District Supervisor, as its new Chairperson and John Mauro, 5th District Supervisor, as Vice-Chairperson for 2013 in the first official public meeting of the new year. Supervisor Hockensmith elected in 2003, most recently served as the Board’s Chairperson in 2010.
“Supervisor Connolly provided exceptional leadership throughout 2012” stated Supervisor Hockensmith. “I look forward to serving as the Board of Supervisors Chair in 2013 as the Board works toward resolving other county issues such as addressing the space concerns of the courts, identifying possible improvements in the criminal justice system through our participation on the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and protecting our $217 million dollar investment in the Iowa Events Center.”
Polk County elected officials received their oath of office at today’s meeting with the Honorable Chief Judge of the Fifth Judicial District Arthur Gamble and Chief Judge of the State Court of Appeals Larry J. Eisenhauer presiding. Polk County Supervisors Robert D. Brownell began serving his third term and Steve Van Oort began his first term of office. Other elected officials who received the oath of office at the meeting were Polk County Sheriff Bill McCarthy and Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald.
