DES MOINES, Iowa (December 14, 2012) — Three families will welcome volunteers, sponsors and friends to the dedication of their new homes, as they become the final families to purchase a home from Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity in 2012. The very last home of 2012, number 26 – the most ever sold by GDM Habitat in one year — will dedicate this Saturday, December 15th, 10:00 a.m. at 1521 22nd ST in Des Moines.
The 26th home will be purchased by Helena, a single mother of three and refugee from Liberia. For 14 years, Liberia was caught in one of the Africa’s bloodiest civil wars. It left 250,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands Liberians without a home. Two years after the start of the war, Helena fled Liberia to a refugee camp in Sierra Leone.
She lived there for 14 years, where all three of her kids were born: Prince, 21; Edna, 18; and Remi, 15. They came to the United States in September of 2005 and have been living in Iowa since.
Helena is excited and ready for the responsibility that comes with owning a home. Helena’s love for her family and community will make her a vital asset to her new neighborhood. The values she has instilled in her children will surely overflow into her care and love for her new home.
The family is thankful for the opportunity to purchase a home of their own, and having the home dedication before Christmas makes this an extra special occasion.
Volunteers are currently working on six homes, scheduled for completion in early 2013, with 27 total homes expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
